Kim Byungjoo

공간을 다루는 작가 김병주는 스틸을 이용하여 입체적인 건축 구조물을 만든다. 작가는 3차원의 입체적 구조물을 2차원적 시각으로 함축시켜 새로운 차원의 공간을 창조해 낸다. 우리 주위에서 볼 수 있는 건축물들의 건물의 부피감을 완전히 배제하고, 투시도법을 적용하여 평면의 겹겹이 얽은 가느다란 철선 구조물을 반복하여 새로운 골조의 열린 공간으로 재해석한다. 그리고 건축물의 보이지 않는 내부 공간을 겉으로 드러내는 작업을 통해 안과 밖의 모호한 경계를 선보이고, 구조물의 외부와 내부의 연결하듯 공간에 대한 관람객들의 기억과 경험을 연결한다. 그리고 빛과 보이는 방향에 따라 역동적으로 변화하는 작품에 현재의 감각과 과거의 감정 그리고 미래의 시간을 유기적으로 엮어, 관람객의 시선 변화에 따라 움직이는 인식을 투영시킨다. 이렇듯 회화와 조각의 경계에 있는 그의 작품은 시각과 인식에 대한 질문을 던지며, 작품을 통해 익숙하지 않은 세계를 선보임으로써 확장된 인식의 시각적 경험을 제시하고자 한다. 김병주는 홍익대학교 조소과와 동 대학원을 거쳐 영국 런던예술대학교(UAL, University of the Arts London[Chelsea])에서 미술학 석사 학위를 받고 홍익대학교 박사 학위를 받았다. 뉴욕 Coohaus art(2014), 싱가포르 Gallery Huue(2015), 63스카이 미술관(2017), 가나갤러리 한남(2020), 아트스페이스 호화(2023) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 대안공간 팀프리뷰(2005), 사비나미술관(2011), 양평군립미술관(2013, 2021), 국립현대미술관 서울관(2014), 청주시립미술관(2021) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 난지창작스튜디오와 고양창작스튜디오 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하였으며, 인천국제공항 제 2터미널, 서울시립미술관, 포항시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 미술은행 등에서 작품을 소장하고 있다. The artist Kim Byungjoo manipulates space using steel to create three-dimensional architectural structures. By compressing three-dimensional structures into a two-dimensional visual, Kim creates a new dimension of space. He excludes the sense of volume of buildings that we can see around us and reinterprets them as open spaces with thin wire structures intertwined in layers, applying the principles of perspective. Through his work, he reveals the invisible internal spaces of buildings, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, and connecting viewers' memories and experiences of space as if connecting the exterior and interior of the structure. Moreover, his dynamic works, which change dynamically depending on light and visible direction, organically interweave present sensations, past emotions, and future time, projecting a shifting perception in the viewer's gaze. His works, straddling the boundary between painting and sculpture, pose questions about vision and perception. By presenting an unfamiliar world through his artwork, Kim aims to offer a visually expanded experience of consciousness. Byungjoo graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University and obtained a master's degree in fine arts from the University of the Arts London (Chelsea) after completing his doctoral degree at Hongik University. He has held solo exhibitions at venues such as Coohaus art in New York (2014), Gallery Huue in Singapore (2015), 63 Sky Art Museum (2017), Gana Gallery Hannam (2020), and Art Space Hoha (2023). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at alternative spaces like Team Preview (2005), Sabina Museum (2011), Yangpyeong Municipal Art Museum (2013, 2021), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2014), and Cheongju City Art Museum (2021). He has participated in residencies at Nanji Art Studio and Goyang Art Studio and his works are held in collections at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2, Seoul Museum of Art, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
