Kwon O Bong

권오봉은 자유로운 선과 역동적인 붓질을 통해 회화의 본질을 탐구하며, 다양한 재료를 활용한 독창적인 마티에르로 자신만의 예술적 언어를 구축해왔다. 그의 작업은 직관적인 행위를 기반으로 하며, 이를 통해 독특하고도 강렬한 선의 조형 세계를 펼쳐보인다. 그의 작품은 회화의 중심 요소인 ‘선(line)’에 경계를 두지 않고, 선의 고유한 특성을 살려 규칙과 불규칙이 교차하는 추상적 화면을 형성한다. 이러한 작업 방식은 자유로운 선과 강렬한 붓질의 필력을 바탕으로 ”선의 회화“ 혹은 ”낙서의 회화“로 불리며 주목받고 있다. 작가는 형식적 제약이나 정신적 의미를 넘어, 그리기라는 행위 자체에 초점을 맞추며 무의식적인 창작 과정을 통해 인간 삶의 본질에 대한 새로운 서사를 제시한다. 나무, 갈퀴, 못과 같은 일상적 도구를 활용해 자유롭고 불규칙적인 율동감을 표현하며, 재료의 특성과 작업 속도에 따라 표면의 질감과 여백을 즉흥적으로 변화시킨다. 이를 통해 그의 작품은 역동적 에너지와 깊은 감흥을 동시에 전달한다. 권오봉은 대구출생으로 계명대학교 미술대학에서 서양학과를 졸업하고 동대학원에서 석사학위를 취득하였다. 1985년 도쿄 도논 갤러리를 시작으로, 윤갤러리(1986), 인공갤러리(1989, 1990, 1992), 우손갤러리(2005), 리안 갤러리(2009), 인당뮤지엄(2018), 대구미술관(2024) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 서울, 대구, 독일, 파리, 싱가포르 등에서 열리는 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 2023년 제24회 이인성 미술상을 수상하였으며, 국립현대미술관, 대구미술관, 부산시립미술관, 인당뮤지엄 등에 주요 미술관에 작품이 소장되어 있다. Kwon O Bong has explored the essence of painting through free-flowing lines and dynamic brushstrokes, creating his own artistic language with innovative textures achieved by employing diverse materials. His work is rooted in intuitive gestures, presenting a unique and powerful formal world of lines. Kwon’s artworks transcend boundaries around the central element of painting, the "line," utilizing the innate characteristics of lines to form abstract compositions where order and disorder intersect. This approach, characterized by unrestricted lines and bold brushstrokes, has drawn attention under the terms "line painting" or "graffiti painting." The artist shifts focus beyond formal constraints or symbolic meanings to the act of drawing itself, presenting new narratives about the essence of human life through unconscious creative processes. Using everyday tools such as wood, rakes, and nails, he expresses free and irregular rhythms, improvising the texture and voids of the surface based on the properties of the materials and the speed of his work. This results in artworks that convey both dynamic energy and profound resonance. Born in Daegu, Kwon graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Keimyung University with a degree in Western Painting and obtained a master’s degree from the same institution. Since his debut solo exhibition at Donon Gallery in Tokyo in 1985, he has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Yoon Gallery (1986), In Gong Gallery (1989, 1990, 1992), Wooson Gallery (2005), LEEAHN Gallery (2009), Indang Museum (2018), and Daegu Art Museum (2024). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Seoul, Daegu, Germany, Paris, and Singapore. In 2023, he received the 24th Lee In-Sung Art Award. His works are part of the collections of major art institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Daegu Art Museum, Busan Museum of Art, and Indang Museum.
