Yoon Jongju

대구를 거점으로 활동하고 있는 윤종주는 캔버스 위에 레이어링된 투명하고 간결한 색채 작업으로 잘 알려져 있다. ‘나의 작업들은 색채를 통한 공간성, 그 특유의 물질성과 형태를 실험하는 작업으로 요약된다’고 말하는 작가는, 색과 색 사이에 존재할 법한 제3의 색을 만들어내고자 한다. 관람객은 작품을 통해 무엇인가를 투영하는 것이 아닌, 주변의 빛과 반응하는 색의 속성을 발견하게 된다. 눈을 감았을 때 눈꺼풀을 투과해 보이는 빛처럼, 작품은 색채를 통해 물리적 재료의 속성을 초월하고자 한다. 한 점의 회화가 아닌, 단위 구조로 구성된 작품은 퍼즐처럼 맞춰지며 가로 혹은 세로로 배열되어 각 단위마다 미세한 색의 차이를 드러낸다. 이러한 색의 차이는 시간을 내재한 깊이감을 만들어 내고, 여러 색으로 이루어진 작품은 보는 이의 시선에 따라 밝아지거나 서서히 변하는 듯한 인상을 준다. 빛은 시간이 되고, 색은 공간이 된다. 윤종주의 작업은 자연의 하늘이 변화하듯, 시간의 색을 반영한다. 1971년 대구 출생인 윤종주는 계명대학교 대학원 회화학과에서 서양화를 전공하였으며, 프람프트 프로젝트, 더 그레잇 컬렉션, 을 갤러리, 에이치픽스 도산, 대구문화예술회관, 굿스페이스, 갤러리 담 등의 기관에서 개인전을 가졌다. 또한 《미묘》(예화랑, 서울, 2024), 《속삭이는 꿈》(달서갤러리, 대구, 2024), 《정•정》(아트프로젝트 씨오, 서울,2024), 《Endless, Nameless》(헬렌 제이 갤러리, LA, 2024), 《In time》(갤러리 모이소, 서울, 2023) 등 다수의 기획전의 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 대구미술관, 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 대구문화예술회관, 참저축은행, 디지스트 등에 소장되어 있다. Based in Daegu, Jongjoo Yoon is known for her transparent and refined use of layered colors on canvas. "My works can be summarized as experiments in spatiality through color, as well as the unique materiality and form that color evokes," she explains. Her goal is to explore the potential of a third color—one that seems to exist between two visible hues. Rather than projecting meaning onto the work, the viewer is invited to perceive the qualities of color as it reacts to the surrounding light. Much like the light that filters through closed eyelids, her paintings aim to transcend the physical attributes of their materials through color. Constructed from modular units rather than single canvases, her works resemble puzzles that can be arranged horizontally or vertically. Each unit reveals subtle shifts in tone, resulting in a layered depth that embeds a sense of time. Depending on the viewer’s position and the ambient light, the paintings appear to brighten or change gradually. Light becomes time, and color becomes space. Yoon’s works reflect the temporal palette of the natural sky in flux—an ever-shifting interplay of time and hue. Born in Daegu in 1971, Jongjoo Yoon earned her MFA in Western Painting from Keimyung University. She has held solo exhibitions at institutions including Prompt Project, The Great Collection, UL Gallery, H.Pix Dosan, Daegu Arts Center, Goodspace, and Gallery Dam.
