Casper Kang

캐스퍼강은 힌지의 물성을 이용하여, 작가의 고유한 조형미를 선보인다. 한지를 그을리고, 태우고, 찢고, 표백하는 등 한지가 가지는 물성을 해체하고 재구성하여 변형시켜 새로운 추상 형태를 만들어낸다. 물성과 형상을 모두 비워낸 그의 대표적인 작업방식으로는 크게 한지를 태운 조각을 캔버스에 부착하는 것과 겹겹이 쌓은 한지 틈을 갈라 반전된 색상을 노출하는 것이 있다. 작가의 독창적인 작업 방식은 한국계 캐나다인 2세인 작가에게 한국은 모국이자 타국으로 익숙하면서도 낯선 문화를 경험하며 오는 상실감에서 시작되었다. 작가는 한지의 물성을 해체하는 행위로 생성과 소멸하는 반복하는 작업 과정을 통해 문화에 대한 관념을 자신만의 시각으로 풀어 가고 있다. 그리고 한국 전통 예술의 바탕이 되는 한지의 물성의 변화시키는 실험을 통해 한지가 내포한 문화적 상징성에서 벗어나 그 문화가 가진 본질에 다가가고자 한다. 전통 소재에 대한 작가의 연구는 최근 자개, 닥나무 줄, 돌 등의 천연재료로 확장해 가고 있으며, 작업 역시 평면에서 벗어나, 입체, 설치까지 다양한 형태로 나아가며 작가의 관념을 담아낸다. 캐나다 토론토 출생인 캐스퍼 강은 칼튼 대학에서 건축학 학부(B.A.S.)를 마친 뒤, 2004년 서울로 이주하여 약 2년간 건축회사에서 근무하였다. 2011년 갤러리 이마주를 시작으로 스튜디오 콘크리트(2015), 소피스 갤러리(2016, 2018), 프람프트 갤러리(2022), 갤러리 구조(2023), 노블렉스 컬렉션(2024)에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 다수의 기획전과 프로젝트에 참여하였다. Caspar Kang's artistic vision revolves around the inventive use of "hanji," a traditional Korean paper made from mulberry trees. He disassembles and reconstructs hanji by burning, scorching, tearing, and bleaching it to create new abstract forms. His signature techniques involve attaching burnt hanji pieces onto canvases and exposing layers of hanji to reveal inverted colors. The artist's innovative approach stems from his experience as a second-generation Korean-Canadian, navigating between his homeland and a foreign culture. Kang explores notions of culture through the repetitive process of creation and destruction, deconstructing the properties of hanji from his own perspective. By experimenting with the transformation of hanji, a foundational material in Korean traditional arts, he seeks to transcend its cultural symbolism and approach its essence. Kang's exploration extends beyond traditional materials to include natural elements such as mother-of-pearl, hemp rope, and stones. His work evolves into various forms, from two-dimensional to three-dimensional and installation art, encapsulating his conceptual ideas. Born in Toronto, Canada, Caspar Kang completed his Bachelor of Architectural Studies (B.A.S.) at Carleton University. After immigrating to Seoul in 2004, he worked at an architectural firm for about two years. Since 2011, he has held solo exhibitions at Gallery Imazoo, Studio Concrete, Sophie's Gallery, Prompt Gallery, Gallery Gudong, and Noblex Collection, while also participating in numerous group exhibitions and projects.
