Hong Jung-ouk

홍정욱은 회화가 가진 평면적 조형성을 구조화하여 입체로 확장하는 작업을 선보인다. 작가는 회화의 본질에 대한 질문으로부터 시작하여 소재적인 결합, 구조적인 결합, 설치 과정의 결합을 통해 ‘독립적인 집합’의 시각화를 이룬다. 회화가 가진 물질적 평면성의 형식적 연구로부터 출발한 그의 작품은 크게 입체 캔버스에 나무, 철사, 유리 등의 다양한 개체들의 결합을 통해 반부조적인 작업과 독립 구조적인 작업으로 나누어진다. 작가의 대표적인 형식인 반부조적 형태의 작업은 캔버스의 다양한 변주를 선보이는데, 이는 작가의 대표작〈Infill〉시리즈를 통해 구조적으로 시각화가 명확히 표현되어 있음이 잘 드러난다. 또한 독립적인 구조의 형태가 가지는 작품은 작품 자체를 공간 안으로 집어넣음으로써 단순히 독립적인 개체가 아닌 주변과 어떻게 연결되어 예술작품이 어떻게 공간을 수용하는지에 대해 보여준다. 작가는 공간을 아우르는 ‘입체적 회화’를 통해 정형화된 사각프레임에서 벗어난 회화의 한계를 전면적으로 환기하고 새로운 각도와 시각으로 시각예술에서의 또 다른 방향성을 제시하고자 한다. 홍정욱은 홍익대학교에서 회화과와 일반대학원 회화과를 졸업하고, 런던대학교 슬레이드 미술 대학원에서 석사 학위를 받았으며, 현재 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 교수로 재직중이다. 갤러리 룩스(2003), 리안갤러리(2019), 김종영 미술관(2013) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 바르셀로나 Centre d'Art Tecla Sala(2010), 런던 James Freeman Gallery(2011) 서울대학교 미술관(2013), 트론헤임, 노르웨이 Babel(2015), OCI 미술관(2017), 경기도미술관(2017), 일우 스페이스(2020) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 김종영 미술관 오늘의 작가(2013), Guasch Coranty International Painting Prize 2010(finalist, 바르셀로나), New Contemporaries 2009(finalist, 런던) 등에서 수상하였으며, 그의 작품은 서울시립미술관, OIC 미술관, 현대카드, 유진투자증권, 국립현대미술관 미술은행 등에 소장되어 있다. Hong Jung-ouk presents works that extend the planar formalism inherent in painting into three-dimensional space. Starting from questions about the essence of painting, the artist visualizes the concept of 'independent sets' through the combination of materials, structural connections, and installation processes. Stemming from formal studies of the material flatness inherent in painting, his works are broadly categorized into relief-like works and independent structural works, achieved through the combination of various objects such as wood, wire, and glass on three-dimensional canvases. His representative works, characterized by relief-like forms, demonstrate various variations of the canvas, as exemplified in his representative series "Infill," where the structural visualization is distinctly expressed. Furthermore, the works embodying independent structures illustrate not only the artwork as an independent entity but also how it is connected to its surroundings and how artwork interacts with space. Through the encompassing 'three-dimensional painting,' the artist seeks to break free from the confines of conventional rectangular frames in painting, offering new perspectives and directions in the visual arts. Hong Jung-ouk graduated from Hongik University with a degree in Painting and completed his master's degree at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Currently, he serves as a professor in the Department of Painting at Hongik University. He has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Gallery Lux (2003), Lian Gallery (2019), and Kim Jong-young Art Museum (2013). Additionally, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Centre d'Art Tecla Sala in Barcelona (2010), James Freeman Gallery in London (2011), Seoul Museum of Art (2013), Trondheim, Norway's Babel (2015), OCI Museum of Art (2017), Gyeonggi Museum of Art (2017), and Ilwoo Space (2020). Hong has received awards from Kim Jong-young Art Museum's "Today's Artist" (2013), the Guasch Coranty International Painting Prize 2010 (finalist, Barcelona), and New Contemporaries 2009 (finalist, London). His works are housed in institutions such as the Seoul Museum of Art, OCI Museum of Art, Hyundai Card, Eugene Investment & Securities, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's Art Bank.
