Hong Sooyeon

홍수연은 ‘추상’ 회화에 천착하며 지난 30년 동안 꾸준히 활동을 이어왔다. 작가는 회화 고유의 관습적인 붓질에서 탈피하며, 안료의 연구를 통해 자신만의 매체를 만들고, 새로운 회화 방식을 선보인다. 그의 작업은 안료를 캔버스에 붓고 기울여 형태를 결정하고 말리기를 반복해 차분한 단색 배경 위에 유영하는 비정형의 형상들을 치밀하게 구축하는 과정이다. 철저하게 계획된 형상의 추상회화는 물감의 농도와 흐르는 시간의 속도까지 섬세하게 계산하고, 우연한 물감의 움직임까지도 통제함으로써 섬세하면서도 단단한 형상을 그려 나간다. 이렇게 만들어진 형상들은 화면 안에서 서로 밀고 당기는 균형과 팽팽한 긴장감을 만들어내며, 자신만의 추상 형상을 완성해 나간다. 홍수연은 홍익대학교 회화과와 동 대학원을 졸업하고 프랫 인스티튜트 석사를 졸업하였다. 1992년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 포스코미술관(2001), 금호미술관(2002), 갤러리 인(2005), 토탈미술관 the room(2009), 갤러리 플랜트(2010), 갤러리 로얄(2015), 코리아나미술관(2022) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 서울대학교미술관(2009), 일민미술관(2009), 금호미술관(2010), 런던 사치갤러리(2012), 독일 LWL Industrial Museum Zollern(2013), 우민아트센터(2013), 포스코 미술관(2018) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울대학교미술관, 금호미술관, 연세대학교 박물관, 상하이 한국 총영사관, 네덜란드 한국대사관, 인도 한국대사관, 포스코센터, 삼성서초사옥, 웨스턴조선 호텔, 콘라드호텔 등에서 소장되어 있다. Hong Sooyeon has been actively engaged in abstract painting for the past 30 years. Departing from the conventional brushwork of painting, the artist creates her own medium through pigment research and introduces new painting techniques. Her process involves pouring pigments onto the canvas, tilting and manipulating them to determine forms, and repeating drying to meticulously construct amorphous shapes floating on serene monochromatic backgrounds. The meticulously planned abstract paintings calculate even the density of the paint and the speed of flowing time, and control even the accidental movement of the paint, thus drawing delicate yet firm shapes. These created forms generate a balance of push and pull within the canvas, creating a tense atmosphere, and gradually completing her unique abstract forms. Hong Sooyeon graduated from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Hongik University, and obtained a master's degree from Pratt Institute. Since her first solo exhibition in 1992, she has held solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the POSCO Art Museum(2001), Geumho Museum(2002), Gallery IN(2005), Total Art Museum_The Room(2009), Gallery Plant(2010), Gallery Royal(2015), and Korea Art Museum(2022). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including the Seoul National University Museum of Art(2009), Ilmin Museum of Art(2009), Geumho Museum(2010), Saatchi Gallery in London (2012), LWL Industrial Museum Zollern in Germany(2013), Wumin Art Center(2013), and POSCO Museum of Art(2018). Her works are housed in collections at prestigious institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul National University Museum of Art, Geumho Museum, Yonsei University Museum, Consulate General of Korea in Shanghai, Embassy of Korea in the Netherlands, Embassy of Korea in India, POSCO Center, Samsung Seocho Building, The Westin Chosun Hotel, and Conrad Hotel.
