‘Beyond Visibility’ Gallery Huue Singapore is pleased to present ‘Beyond Visibility’, an exhibition featuring works by 4 Korean artists: Kwon Yongrae, Kim Chan-Il, Kim Ilhwa, and Hong Sooyeon, from April 27, 2019, to July 31, 2019. For a long time, representation was considered a limitation of visual art. Attempts to break free from this restraint lie at the root of the development of abstract art. Examining the various manifestations of abstract art and how they have evolved sheds light on different aspects of abstract expression. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the almost meditative process of art creation, the labor-intensive repetitive acts, and craftsmanship, which are often overlooked in contemporary art. Kwon Yongrae’s ceaseless experimentation with light has led him to produce a unique ‘Visual unit’. Arranged on the canvas plane, these units create a warm yet sharp and sensitive surface. Artworks exist as actual supports of light, containing light within themselves. The fundamental element of Kim Ilhwa’s visual language is the “seed”, made of hand-dyed Korean traditional Mulberry paper. This “Seed” serves as a metaphor for the potential energy that forms the world. Kim Chanil challenges the flatness of painting. The small delicate sculptures budding from the surface of the canvas are made by artist’s own hands with tools like a rivet and a hammer. Vibrating on the surface, they flow silently. His Artworks are both the object and the result of the experiment on de-painterly plane. Hong Sooyeon constructs the condensed temporality on the surface of the painting. Through the posed, but simultaneously active flow of the paint, Sooyeon reconstructs the plane with multiple overlapping layers. By revealing the moving clotty-lumpy shapes, the layers of images arise excitement and emotional tension. Those Artists’ constant labor from the meditative attitude is expressed in repetitive visual elements. The process of perceiving their physical attributes is frequently accompanied by the sensation that stirs emotions. Beyond the visibility, the artwork’s resonant synesthetic will ignites a intuitive energy in the audience. Huue Contemporary hopes give a chance to experience the various strategies which artist apply to their works, and to take a look at how abstract art affects with human’s perceptions and resonates in space. ‘Beyond Visibility’ 갤러리 휴 싱가포르는 2019년 4월 27일부터 7월 31일까지 권용래, 김찬일, 김일화, 홍수연 작가가 참여하는 기획전 ‘Beyond Visibility’를 개최한다. 추상미술의 발전의 근간에는 오랜 기간동안 시각예술의 한계로 여겨졌던 재현이라는 굴레에서 벗어나기 위한 시도들이 있다. 전시는 다양한 갈래로 가지를 뻗치며 발전해온 추상미술이 동시대에 이르러 어떠한 양상을 보이는지, 그중 몇 가지 갈래를 조명한다. 일반적으로 작가들은 연구와 실험을 통하여 자신만의 조형언어를 구축하기 마련이다. 이 전시에서 소개하는 작가들의 작품에서는 노동집약적인 반복적 행위와 장인정신-동시대 미술에서는 다소 소홀하게 여겨지기도 하는- 마저 엿보이는 명상적인 작업과정이 작품의 조형적 양상에 드러낸다. 권용래는 끊임없는 빛에 관한 실험을 통해 그의 조형 기본단위를 만들어낸다. 스테인레스 스틸에 반복된 망치질을 하여 만들어지는 유닛들은 평면 위에 놓여 날카롭지만 따뜻한 표면을 형성한다. 그의 작품은 빛을 재현한다기 보다는 그 본질을 오롯이 담아내는 실존적 지지체로서 작용한다. 김일화는 조형언어의 기본 어절은 수제 염색 과정을 거친 한지가 돌돌 말려진 씨앗, 'Seed'이다. 씨앗들은 세상을 구성하게 될 잠재적 에너지에 대한 은유이다. 평면위에 뿌려진 씨앗들은 본인의 세계를 은유함과 동시에 더 큰 우주를 형성하며 중첩구조를 형성한다. 김찬일은 회화의 평면성에 도전하는 작업을 전개한다. 작가가 직접 리벳이나 나사못 등을 이용하여 미묘한 질감으로 형성해 낸 작은 조각들은 평면위에 모여서 조용히 진동하는 흐름을 만들어낸다. 그의 작품은 하나의 오브제인 동시에, 탈회화적 화면으로서의 평면에 대한 실험의 결과물이기도 하다. 홍수연은 회화라는 평면 위에 시간성이 응축된 화면을 구축한다. 정적인 동시에 동적인 물감의 흐름을 통하여 시간차가 있는 이미지의 중첩을 만들어내고, 이는 뭉근하게 움직이는 듯한 형태를 보이며 흥분과 긴장감을 일으킨다. 위의 작가들이 작업과정에 있어서 수행하는 노동 행위와 명상적인 자세는 반복적인 조형요소를 통하여 리드미컬하게 작품에 표현된다. 관람자가 이러한 표현을 인식하는 과정에서는 자연스럽게 감정을 불러일으키는 자극이 동반된다. 이는 단순한 시각성을 넘어 표면을 흐르는 촉각적 심상과 더불어 반복과 변화를 통한 직관적 에너지를 촉발시키며 공감각적인 무형의 파장을 자아낸다. 휴컨템포러리는 이번 전시의 작품들이 각기 다른 의도와 에너지를 지닌 파장들로서 어떻게 공명하는지, 이러한 자극에 대하여 감상자는 어떠한 반향을 일으키고 반응하며 예술 체험의 공간을 형성해 나가는지 탐구해 볼 수 있는 기회를 나눌 수 있기를 바란다.
