Kim Bongtae

색채의 마술사라고 불리는 김봉태는 한국 추상미술 1세대 작가로 원색의 색채와 기하학적 조형이 두드러지는 작품을 통해 독창적인 작업 세계를 구축해왔다. 그의 작품은 어떠한 조류에 편승하지 않고, 자신만의 조형적 구조를 형성하며 한국 미술계에서 독자적인 위치를 차지하고 있다. 그의 주요 대표작 시리즈는 쓸모없이 버려진 상자를 구조적으로 재해석하며, 빛을 투과하는 플렉시 글라스(Plexiglas)를 사용함으로써 공간감을 확장한 작품이다. 작품 자체를 즐겁게 보기를 바라는 작가는 상자를 춤추듯, 날아다니는 듯 즐거운 형상으로 표현하며, 밝고 긍정적인 에너지를 선사한다. 나아가 시리즈는 드로잉, 회화, 조각 작업으로까지 확대되어, 이차원성과 삼차원성의 변주를 가진 다양한 작품으로 선보인다. 김봉태는 1961년 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고 1967년 미국 오티스 미술대학(Otis College of Art and Design) 대학원에서 회화와 조각을 전공하였다. 60년대 국내 엥포르멜 미술의 주도적 그룹이었던 ‘60미협’과 ‘악뛰엘’의 창립멤버로 활동하였고 1963년 파리비엔날레에 참여하였다. 같은 해 뉴욕에서 개최되는 국제조형미술협회 심포지움에 초대된 것을 계기로 미국으로 이주해, 남가주대 오티스피아슨대, 캘리포니아 주립대, 웨스트 로스엔젤레스 미대 등에서 강의했고, 1980년대 덕성여대 교수로 재직하면서, 국내에 정착하여 작가 활동을 이어가고 있다. 대전시립미술관, 부산시립미술관, 에이디아이갤러리(샌프란시스코), 피셔갤러리(로스앤젤레스), 미술세계 갤러리(도쿄) 등 주요 세계 도시에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 2007년 제1회 대한민국 미술인상, 2023년 21회 이동훈 미술상 본상 과 2024년 36회 이중섭 미술상 등을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 부산시립미술관, 리움미술관, 우양미술관, 영국 대영박물관, 프랑스 정부, 미국 시크시유스 대학, 미국 오티스 미술대학 등 대영박물관(영국), 프랑스정부(프랑스), 스위스 한국대사관(스위스), 시모노세키미술관(일본), 폴란드 한국대사관(폴란드) 등 국내외 유수의 기관에 소장되어 있다. Kim Bongtae, known as the "Magician of Colors," is a first-generation Korean abstract artist renowned for his use of primary colors and geometric forms, establishing a unique creative realm. His works do not conform to any particular trend; instead, he has developed his own structural aesthetics, securing a distinctive position in the Korean art scene. His representative series, "Dancing Boxes," reinterprets discarded boxes structurally, utilizing light-transmitting Plexiglas to enhance spatial perception. Desiring viewers to enjoy his works, the artist portrays boxes as if they are dancing or flying, exuding bright and positive energy. The "Dancing Boxes" series extends into drawings, paintings, and sculptures, offering diverse works that play with two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality. Born in 1937 in Busan, Kim graduated from Seoul National University's College of Fine Arts in 1961 and pursued painting and sculpture at Otis College of Art and Design in the United States, graduating in 1967. In the 1960s, he moved to the U.S., actively working as a painter and printmaker, and taught at institutions such as Otis Art Institute of L.A. County, California State University, and West Los Angeles College. Returning to Korea in the 1980s, he continued his artistic endeavors while teaching at Seoul National University, Sungshin Women's University, and Duksung Women's University. He has held over 40 solo exhibitions in major cities worldwide, including at the Daejeon Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art, ADI Gallery (San Francisco), Fisher Gallery (Los Angeles), and Misulsegye Gallery (Tokyo). His accolades include the 1st Republic of Korea Artist Prize (Fine Art) in 2007, the 21st Lee Dong Hoon Art Award in 2023, and the 36th Lee Jung Seop Art Award in 2024. Kim's works are part of prestigious collections both domestically and internationally, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art, Leeum, Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art, the British Museum, the French government, Otis College of Art and Design, the British Museum (UK), the French government (France), the Korean Embassy in Switzerland (Switzerland), the Shimonoseki Museum of Art (Japan), and the Korean Embassy in Poland (Poland).
