‘ART-IST : Ways of seeing’ 휴컨템포러리 서울은 2021년에 이어 2022년에 2번째로 7월 20일부터 8월 7일까지 청담 분더샵에서 개최하는 ‘ART-IST :Ways of seeing’을 기획하였다. 이번 전시는 작품을 ‘본다’라는 행위에 집중하며, 예술의 불변적 가치와 그 역할의 중요성에 대해 논의한다. 전시는 예술에 대한 진면모를 들여다볼 수 있는 작품들로 구성되어 있으며, 평면, 미디어, 조각, 아트퍼니쳐 등 다양한 장르의 작가들이 참여한다. 그리고 그간 작품 자체를 마주하기보다 그 이면의 정보에 집중하며, 예술을 감상하는 데 있어 놓쳤던 중요한 부분을 다시 한번 더 일깨워 주기를 위해 기획된 전시이다. 작가는 자신만의 예술적 언어를 만들어내고 이를 통해 대중들과 소통한다. 작가는 다양한 형식과 표현법을 찾으며, 어떠한 -ism(-이즘)에 속하는 것이 아니라 나의 예술에 적합한 것만 취한다. 나아가 자신만의 고유한 예술적 재현에 대해서 고심하며, 작품 그 자체로 독자적인 예술성에 대해 논의한다. 예술가들은 독창적인 시각으로 형식적 미학의 제한된 틀을 단호하게 거부함으로써 스스로의 자율성을 획득하는 것이다. 이처럼 예술은 단순히 아름답다거나 독창성을 가졌다는 이유만으로 그 가치를 인정받는 것이 아니라 예술 작품을 통해 여러 가지 방식으로 통찰력과 이해, 세계를 보는 방식을 풍요롭게 하는 데 있어 그 가치를 인정받는다. 전시 타이틀인 「ART-IST : Ways of seeing」는 ‘예술가/예술-전문가’ 또는 ‘예술이라는 것은’ 이라는 이중적 의미를 담고 있는 ‘ART-IST’ 와 보는 방법에 대해 탐구의 뜻을 담고 있는 ‘ways of seeing’의 결합으로 대중들에게 스스로 예술에 대한 고유한 가치에 대해 논의할 수 있는 자리를 마련한다. 특히 이번 전시는 작가와 작품에 대한 아무런 정보 없이 작품 그 자체를 직관적으로 마주함으로써 보는 이의 감각과 오감을 자극하게 된다. ”말 이전에 본다는 행위가 있다.” _존 버거 본 전시는 분더샵 청담 지하의 S, N관 두 개의 공간에서 소개한다. 먼저 S관은 온전히 작품을 ‘본다’는 행위에 집중하며, ‘예술이란 무엇인가?’에 대해 탐구한다. 예술가들은 자신만의 고유한 언어를 가지고 있으며, 각기 다른 조형 언어로 자신만의 내러티브를 작품에 담아낸다. 이에 우리는 어떤 영역에도 속하지 않고 작가만의 고유한 조형언어로 구현된 작품 속의 내적 의미에 대해 주목하고자 한다. 특히 S관에서는 감각을 일깨우는 미디어아트, 조각 등의 작품들을 선보이며, 예술의 의미를 살펴볼 수 있는 흥미로운 기회를 제공한다. 작가들이 치열하게 사유하며 구현한 창작의 세계를 전시 공간에 펼침으로써, 보는 이의 시각, 청각, 촉감 등 긴밀하게 연결되어 있던 예술적 감각을 확장시키게 된다. 다른 공간 N관은 일상에서 예술의 역할이 무엇인지에 대해 탐구한다. 예술은 예술가의 상상력의 표현으로 새로운 시각을 제시하며, 예술가들은 시대를 반영하는 동시에 현실과의 만남을 새롭게 변화시킨다. 이처럼 일상속에서 영감을 불어넣는 예술들을 선보인다. 우리의 일상에서 마주했던 사물과 풍경을 새로운 방식과 형태로 선보이는 설치미술과 회화, 아트퍼니쳐 작품들로 구성되어, 보는 이의 일상의 경험을 다채롭게 하며, 세상을 보게 되는 방식이 어떻게 확장되는가에 대해 논의하며, 예술이 우리의 삶에 어떻게 스며드는지에 대해 고찰한다. S관부터 N관까지 이어지는 작품의 감상으로 예술이 우리에게 오기까지의 일련의 과정들을 마주할 수 있고, 예술적 상상력의 독특한 표현은 예술이 아니었더라면 깨닫지 못한 방식으로 우리를 마주함으로써 우리의 환기된 상상력의 지평을 확장시킨다. 그리고 예술을 통해 우리의 세계관을 넓혀주며, 보는 이의 내적인 삶을 깊이 있게 하고, 우리 자신과 세계 모두에 대한 통찰을 풍부하게 해준다. 나아가 이번 전시를 통해 범람한 정보들 속에서 놓치고 있었던 예술의 본질에 대해 다시 한번 되짚어 보는 기회를 가진다. ‘ART-IST : Ways of seeing’ Huue Contemporary Seoul planned 'ART-IST: Ways of Seeing' to be held at BOONTHESHOP in Cheongdam from July 20th to August 7th, 2022, following its exhibition in 2021. The exhibition consists of works that allow viewers to delve into the true aspects of art, with artists from various genres participating, including fine art, video installation, sculpture, and art furniture. It is designed to draw attention to important aspects of art appreciation that may have been overlooked by focusing on the information behind the works rather than merely encountering the works themselves. Artists create their own artistic language and communicate with the public through it. They explore various formats and expressions, only adopting those suitable for their own art rather than conforming to any particular ‘-ism’. Furthermore, they deliberate on their unique artistic representation and discuss the inherent artistic value of their work. Artists gain autonomy by firmly rejecting the restrictive framework of formal aesthetics with their innovative perspectives. Art is not merely acknowledged for its beauty or originality but for enriching insight, understanding, and various ways of viewing the world through artworks. The exhibition title, "ART-IST: Ways of Seeing," combines the dual meanings of 'Artist/Art Expert' or 'What art is' in 'ART-IST' with the exploration of ways of seeing in 'Ways of Seeing,' providing an opportunity for the public to discuss the unique value of art for themselves. Particularly, this exhibition stimulates the senses and perceptions of viewers by allowing them to encounter artworks intuitively without any information about the artist or the work itself. "There is an act of seeing before speaking." - John Berger This exhibition is presented in two spaces, S and N, in the underground of BOONTHESHOP Cheongdam. Firstly, the S space focuses solely on the act of "seeing" artworks and explores the question, "What is Art?" Artists each have their unique language and express their narratives in their works using different sculptural languages. Here, we pay attention to the internal meanings of works manifested through the artists' unique sculptural languages, transcending any particular field. The S space showcases media art and sculptures that awaken senses and provide an interesting opportunity to explore the meaning of art. By unfolding the world of creation that artists have fiercely contemplated and implemented in the exhibition space, it expands the viewer's artistic senses, including visual, auditory, and tactile senses. On the other hand, the N space investigates the role of art in everyday life. Art presents new perspectives through the expression of artists' imaginations, reflecting the era while transforming encounters with reality. It presents artworks that infuse inspiration from daily life into the installation art, paintings, and art furniture, enriching viewers' experiences of everyday life. It discusses how the way we see the world expands through art and reflects on how art permeates our lives. Through experiencing the artworks from S to N spaces, viewers confront the series of processes leading up to art and expand their horizons of refreshed imagination, which they may not have realized had it not been for the unique expressions of artistic creativity. Furthermore, art broadens our worldview, deepens our inner lives, and enriches insights into ourselves and the world. Additionally, this exhibition provides an opportunity to reconsider the essence of art that may have been overlooked amid the flood of information.
