Kim Chanil

김찬일은 조각적 오브제를 활용하여 ‘부조회화’라는 새로운 작업방식을 시도하며, 회화의 다양한 가능성을 보여준다. 그의 작품은 캔버스에 높낮이가 다른 작은 조각들을 핀셋으로 부착시켜서 회화의 가장 기본적인 선을 릴리프 형태로 표현하고 있다. 부조의 형태를 띠고 있는 작품은 높낮이에 따라 들어가 있는 곳과 나와 있는 곳이 대비되고, 빛과 보는 이의 움직임에 따라 다르게 반응된다. 캔버스 위의 조각들이 만들어 내는 파동과 에너지, 보는 각도에 따라 빛과 그림자에 의한 촉각적인 화면을 생성하는 것이다. 작가는 안료와 미디움으로 직접 제작한 물감을 반복하여 채색하는데, 이렇게 만들어진 색감은 기존 물감의 혼합으로 만든 것이 아니라 안료나 금속 파우더, 돌가루 등의 다양한 재료의 실험을 통해 만들어진 것으로 단색조의 세련되고 은은한 광택을 띠는 작가 특유한 색채를 보여주고 있다. 이처럼 작가는 다양한 시도를 통해 우연적인 발견들까지 작품으로 끌어들여 기존의 가진 회화의 규칙들을 비틀고 재조합하며, 작가만의 독창적인 작품을 선보이고 있다. 김찬일은 홍익대학교 회화과와 동 대학원, 그리고 뉴욕주립대학 대학원 회화과와 판화과를 졸업하였으며, 현재 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 교수로 재직중이다. 1988년 바탕골 미술관을 시작으로 태백화랑(1991), 모란갤러리(1997), 박영덕화랑(2005,2007), 노화랑(2008), 화이트블록(2012), 갤러리 휴 싱가포르(2014), 갤러리 미고(2019, 2020), 홍익대학교 현대미술관(2022), 갤러리 마노(2016, 2023) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 부산비엔날레 특별전(2010), 경기도미술관(2010), 포스코미술관(2011), 서울시립미술관(2011), 대만 동해대학 미술관(2011), 수원아이파크미술관(2015), 홍콩 MIZUMA 갤러리(2018), 등 다양한 국내외 기획전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 스위스 UN 대사 본부, 터키 대사관, 타이페이 만다린 오리엔탈호텔, 정저우 르메르디앙 호텔, 마카오 갤럭시 호텔 등에 소장되어 있다. Kim Chanil explores the use of sculptural objects to attempt a new artistic approach called "relief painting," showcasing the diverse possibilities of painting. His works involve attaching small pieces of varying heights to the canvas with tweezers, representing the most fundamental lines of painting in relief form. The relief-shaped artworks create contrasts between areas that are raised and areas that are recessed, reacting differently to light and the viewer's movement. The waves and energy created by the pieces on the canvas generate a tactile screen through light and shadow, depending on the viewing angle. The artist repeatedly applies paint directly made from pigments and medium, which is not a mixture of conventional paints but rather created through experiments with various materials such as pigments, metal powders, and stone dust. This process results in the artist's distinctive colors, displaying a sophisticated and subtle sheen in monochromatic tones. Through various experiments, the artist incorporates accidental discoveries into his works, twisting and recombining the rules of traditional painting to present his unique and innovative artworks. Kim Chanil graduated from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Hongik University, as well as the Graduate School of Painting and Printmaking at the State University of New York. Currently, he serves as a professor in the Department of Painting at Hongik University. Since 1988, he has held solo exhibitions at various venues such as the Batangol Art Museum, Taebaek gallery(1991), Moran Gallery(1997), Park Young Deok gallery(2005,2007), gallery Noh(2008), White Block(2012), Gallery Huue Singapore(2014), Gallery MIGO(2019, 2020), Hongik University Museum of Contemporary Art(2022), and Gallery Mano(2016,2023). Additionally, he has participated in numerous domestic and international exhibitions, including the Busan Biennale Special Exhibition(2010), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art(2010), POSCO Art Museum(2011), Seoul Museum of Art(2011), National Dong Hwa University Art Museum in Taiwan(2011), Suwon Museum Of Art (2015), and MIZUMA Gallery in Singapore(2018). His works are held in collections at institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, UN Headquarters in Switzerland, Turkish Embassy, Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Taipei, Le Meridien Hotel in Zhengzhou, and Galaxy Hotel in Macau.
