Koo Seongyoun

구성연은 사탕, 설탕과 같은 재료로 직접 오브제를 제작하여 사진으로 기록을 남기며, 시각적 은유를 통해 인간의 삶에 대해 성찰한다. 작가는 이미 존재하는 대상을 촬영하는 것이 아니라 자신이 표현하고자 하는 대상을 공들여 만든다. 이렇게 만들어진 오브제는 하나의 조각 역할을 한다. 그의 대표작〈사탕〉시리즈는 민화〈모란도〉에서 느낀 인간의 삶에 대해 작가가 재해석한 작품으로 영원하지 않은 꽃을 통해 부귀를 꿈꾸는 인간의 욕망을 사탕으로 재해석한 것이다. 또 다른 작품인〈설탕〉시리즈 역시 생성과 소멸에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다. 설탕으로 만든 오브제는 한층 더 화려하고 정교하다. 설탕이 녹아버리기 전 찰나의 순간을 사진으로 남기는 작가는 사진으로 현실과 이상, 실재와 허상이라는 이중적 경계를 보여준다. 이러한 그의 작품은 만들어진 오브제는 사라지지만 사진으로 남은 작품을 통해 가질 수 없는 욕망보다 현재, 순간의 중요함에 대한 철학적 성찰을 담아낸다. 동국대학교 인도철학과와 서울예술대학 사진과를 졸업한 구성연은 2000년 서남포토스페이스를 시작으로 한전플라자(2001), 덕원갤러리(2004), 갤러리 쌈지(2005), 트렁크갤러리(2009), 예화랑(2016) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 환기미술관(2012), 일우아트스페이스(2013), 국립현대미술관(2014), 대구미술관(2016) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행과 경기도 미술관 등에 소장되어 있다. Koo Seongyoun creates objects using materials such as candy and sugar, and documents them through photography to reflect on human life through visual metaphors. Rather than photographing existing subjects, the artist meticulously crafts objects that embody what she wishes to express. These created objects serve as pieces of a puzzle in her works. Her representative series, "Candy," is a reinterpretation of human desires, inspired by folk painting "Moran Do," where she reinterprets the desire for wealth through ephemeral flowers into candy. Another series, "Sugar," tells a story of creation and disappearance, with objects made of sugar being even more elaborate and dazzling. By capturing the fleeting moment before the sugar melts through photography, the artist explores the dual boundaries between reality and ideal, existence and illusion. Her works reflect philosophical contemplations on the importance of the present moment over unattainable desires, even after the crafted objects disappear, through the remaining photographs. After graduating from Dongguk University with a degree in Indian Philosophy and Seoul Institute of the Arts with a major in Photography, Koo Seongyoun began exhibiting at Seoul Namu Photo Space, followed by solo exhibitions at venues such as Hanjin Plaza, Deokwon Gallery, Ssamzie Gallery, Trunk Gallery, and Gallery Yeh. She also participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Hwangi Art Museum, Ilwoo Art Space, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and Daegu Art Museum. Her works are held in collections at institutions like the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Gyeonggi Museum of Art.
