Kwon Yongrae

권용래는 1980년 대학 시절부터 빛을 이용한 부조 작업을 연구해 왔다. 작가는 자신의 작품을 ‘빛’이라고 표현하는데 이는 하나의 작품을 완성하기 위해 빛을 도입하는 것이 아니라 그 자체가 재료이자 표현 기법이며, 빛을 그려내는 것이 아닌 화면 위에 그것이 머물 수 있도록 자리를 마련한 것이다. 작가는 2004년부터 빛을 가장 잘 표현하고 담는 재료인 스테인리스 스틸 조각을 주요 재료로 활용하여, 회화와 부조를 융합한 작업을 선보이고 있다. 망치로 수없이 두들겨진 수십 또는 수백개의 스테인리스 조각들은 빛의 움직임에 의해 표면이 리드미컬하게 채워진다. 움직이는 빛의 반사를 통해 일어나는 환영과 그림자는 대립적으로 하나의 형상을 만들어낸다. 그리고 작품의 스테인리스 스틸, 그 차가움과 뜨거움으로 각양각색을 띠고 있는 빛의 다양한 현상의 변주는 세상을 영위하고 있는 사람들의 삶의 모습을 담아낸다. 권용래는 서울대학교 서양화과와 동 대학원을 졸업하였다. 1989년 윤갤러리를 시작으로 갤러리시몬(1995, 1998, 2006), 성곡미술관(2001), 금산갤러리(2016), 갤러리비케이(2021), 갤러리비트리(2023) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 국립현대미술관(1990), 서울시립미술관(2008), 전북도립미술관(2011), 서울대학교미술관(2017), 세화미술관(2023) 등 다수의 기획전과 국내외 아트페어 참여하였다. 작품은 국립현대미술관, 삼성문화재단, 서울시립미술관, 중국북경미술관, 홍콩 콴훤핀 미술관 등 유수의 미술관 및 박물관 등에 소장되어 있다. Kwon Yongrae has been researching relief work using light since his university days in the 1980s. The artist expresses his works as 'light', not as something introduced to complete a piece, but as the material and expression technique itself. He creates spaces on the canvas for light to inhabit rather than depicting light itself. Since 2004, the artist has been using stainless steel sculptures, the material best suited to express and contain light, as the primary material for his fusion works of painting and relief. Dozens or hundreds of stainless steel pieces, hammered countless times, are rhythmically filled by the movement of light. The illusions and shadows created through the reflection of moving light juxtapose to form a singular shape. The variations of light, manifested through the stainless steel's coldness and warmth, depict various aspects of life. Kwon Yongrae graduated from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Seoul National University. Starting with Yoon Gallery in 1989, he has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Gallery Simon(1995, 1998, 2006), Seonggok Museum of Art(2001), Geumsan Gallery(2016), Gallery BK(2021), and Gallery Beatree(2023). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs both domestically and internationally, including those at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(1990), Seoul Museum of Art(2008), Jeonbuk Provincial Museum of Art(2011), Seoul National University Museum of Art 2017), and Sehwa Museum of Art(2023). His works are held in prestigious institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Samsung Foundation for Culture, Seoul Museum of Art and National Art Museum of China in Beijing.
