Lee Kangwook

이강욱은 세포를 모티브로 형이상학적 정신세계와 자아의 문제를 회화 중심으로 탐구해 오고 있다. 작가는 ‘자아 본질’이 무엇인가에 대한 의문을 던지며, 최소한의 자신을 이루고 있는 나노 입자인 세포에 주목하였다. 작가는 어떤 형상을 이루는 세포를 중심으로 미시적 세계로부터 출발하여 우주의 거시적 세계를 회화로 구현한다. 그리고 우주의 근원적인 실재와 회화의 본질이 무엇인가에 대해 질문을 던지며 평면 회화의 영역 내에서 다양한 방식으로 조형적 실험을 통해 풀어나가고 있다. 이는 그의 대표작〈비가시적 공간 (Invisible Space Image)〉에서 잘 나타난다. 미시적인 유기체들이 기하학적 형상을 한 화면 속에 가득 담아낸 작품은 상대적인 기준에 따라 하나의 거시적인 세계로 연결되어 있음을 보여주고 있다. 그 외〈지오메트릭 폼(Geometric form)〉와〈제스처(The Gesture)〉시리즈에서도 볼 수 있듯이, 그의 작품은 회화의 기본 요소가 되는 점, 선, 면의 조화와 화면을 구성하는 색의 레이어들을 정교하게 쌓아 올린다. 그리고 2차원의 평면 공간을 3차원의 무한한 거시 공간으로 구축하면서 무한한 공간에서 인간에게 우주의 원리를 담으며 자아를 향한 통찰과 사색이 이루어지기를 희망한다. 이강욱은 홍익대학교 회화과와 동 대학원을 졸업하였고, 런던의 첼시 칼리지에서 석사 학위와 이스트 런던 유니버시티에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 현재 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 교수로 재직중이다. 2002 토틸미술관을 시작으로 노화랑(2004, 2007, 2011), 동경화랑(2014), 아라리오 갤러리(2016, 2017), 갤러리 휴 싱가포르(2014, 2017), 롯데백화점 본점 에비뉴엘 아트월(2024) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 서울시립미술관(2005), 홍익대학교 현대미술관(2015), 뮤지엄 산(2019), 리움미술관(2021) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 대한민국회화대전 대상(2001), 동아미술제 동아미술상(2002), 중앙미술대전 대상(2002), 송은미술대상 지원상(2003) 등을 수상하였으며, 호암미술관, 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 등에서 작품을 소장하고 있다. Lee Kangwook has been exploring the issues of metaphysical realms and the self through the motif of cells in his paintings. He questions what the essence of the self is and focuses on cells, the nano-particles that constitute the minimum of oneself. Starting from the microscopic world represented by cells, the artist portrays the macroscopic world of the universe through painting. He raises questions about the fundamental reality of the universe and the essence of painting, exploring them through various forms of sculptural experiments within the domain of flat painting. This is well demonstrated in his representative work, "Invisible Space Image," where microscopic organisms, shaped geometrically, fill the canvas, showing how they connect to one macroscopic world depending on relative standards. In addition, as seen in the "Geometric Form" and "The Gesture" series, his works intricately layer the basic elements of painting - points, lines, and planes - along with the colors that constitute the screen. By constructing a two-dimensional flat space into an infinite three-dimensional macro space, he hopes to convey the principles of the universe to humans from infinite space and to achieve insight and contemplation towards the self. Lee Kangwook graduated from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Hongik University, obtained a master's degree from Chelsea College in London, and a doctoral degree from East London University. He is currently a professor in the Department of Painting at Hongik University. Starting from the Total Museum in 2002, he held solo exhibitions at venues such as Noh Gallery (2004, 2007, 2011), Dongkyung Gallery (2014), Arario Gallery (2016, 2017), Gallery HU Singapore (2014, 2017), and Lotte Department Store Main Branch Avenue L Artwalk (2024). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions such as the Seoul Museum of Art (2005), the Hongik University Museum of Contemporary Art (2015), the Museum SAN (2019), and the LEUM Art Space (2021). He has received awards such as the Grand Prize at the Korea National Art Exhibition (2001), the Dong-A Art Prize at the Dong-A Art Festival (2002), the Grand Prize at the Central Art Exhibition (2002), and the Song-Eun Art Award Grant (2003). His works are housed in institutions such as the Ho-Am Art Museum, Seoul Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
