Li Setbyul

이샛별의 회화에 등장하는 자연과 그 안의 인물은 어딘가 자연스럽지 못한, 낯선 공존을 드러낸다. 작가는 오랜 시간 녹색을 주요한 회화적 언어로 사용해왔다. 작가에게 녹색은 단순히 자연의 색이 아닌, 오늘날 사회에 만연한 인공적 시스템과 그 안에 내재한 오류와 모순을 드러내는 색이기도 하다. 최근에는 물과 땅이 만나는 경계의 공간인 '기슭'을 통해 현실과 가상, 존재와 비존재, 가능성과 불가능성이 맞닿는 지점을 탐색한다. 리서치를 통해 수집한 현실의 조각들을 재조합해 새로운 현실을 구성하는 그의 작업 방식은 기존의 현실을 가상의 영역으로 밀어 넣어 또 다른 현실의 가능성을 모색하는 과정이기도 하다. 숲의 이미지와 부자연스러운 인물들이 한 화면에 놓일 때, 익숙한 녹 색 풍경은 낯선 감각과 새로운 의미가 생성되는 장소로 전환된다. 이 '버추얼 그린', 재조합된 숲은 현실의 파편들로 구축된 가상의 풍경이자 새로운 자연을 발견하려는 '의지의 풍경'이다. 서로 뒤엉킨 이미지의 현재를 포착하는 이샛별은 우연과 가능성이 교차하는 경계의 지점에서 발생하는 균열과 그 안에 잠재된 가능성을 탐구한다. 이샛별은 서울산업대학교 조형예술과와 2002년 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 갤러리SP(2025, 서울), 드로잉룸(2022, 서울), 인디프레스 갤러리(2021, 서울), 청주미술창작스 튜디오(2019, 청주), 대전테미예술창작센터(2017, 대전) 등에서 개인전을 개최했다. 디아컨템포러리 (2026, 서울), 예술공간이아/포지션민 (2023, 제주), 부산현대미술관(2022, 부산), 무안오승우미 술관(2022, 무안), 서울대미술관(2022, 서울), 백해영 갤러리(2022, 서울) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 대구예술발전소, 청주미술창작스튜디오, 대전테미예술창작센터 의 레지던시 등에 입주하여 작업한 이력이 있다. 현재 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 부산현대미술관, 청주시립미술관, 성남큐브미술관 등을 비롯해 다수의 기관이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다. The nature and figures that appear in Li Setbyul's paintings suggests a coexistence that feels somehow unnatural and unfamiliar. 'Green' has long been a central painterly language in her work. For her, green is not simply the color of nature, but also a color that points to the artificial systems that permeate contemporary society, along with the errors and contradictions embedded within them. Recently, Li Setbyul has explored the concept of 'gisleuk(기슭)'—the edge where water meets land—as a space where reality and virtuality, existence and non-existence, possibility and impossibility converge. Her method of working, which involves collecting fragments of reality through research and recombining them into new configurations, is also a process of pushing reality itself into a virtual realm in search of other possible realities. When images of forests and strangely unnatural figures are placed together within a single painting, the familiar green landscape becomes a place where unfamiliar sensations and new meanings emerge. This “Virtual Green,” reconstructed forest, is both a fictional landscape built from fragments of reality and a landscape of desire that seeks to discover a new form of nature. Capturing the present condition of images that have become intertwined, Li Setbyul explores the ruptures that emerge at points where chance and hope intersect, as well as the potential that lies within them. Li Setbyul graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology and received her MFA from the same institution in 2002. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery SP (2025, Seoul), Drawing Room (2022, Seoul), Indipress Gallery (2021, Seoul), Cheongju Art Studio (2019, Cheongju), and Daejeon Temi Arts Center (2017, Daejeon). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including DIA Contemporary (2026, Seoul), Artspaceiaa / Position Min (2023, Jeju), Busan Museum of Contemporary Art (2022, Busan), Muan Seungwoo Oh Museum of Art (2022, Muan), Seoul National University Museum of Art (2022, Seoul), and Paik Haeyoung Gallery (2022, Seoul). She has also completed residencies at Daegu Art Factory, Cheongju Creative Art Studio, and Daejeon Temi Arts Center. Her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art, Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, Cheongju Museum of Art, Seongnam Cube Museum of Art, and other institutions.
