디아컨템포러리는 2026년 7월 4일부터 7월 25일까지 방정아, 이샛별, 서원미, 박소영이 참여하는 그룹전《PROTAGONIST》를 개최한다. ‘프로타고니스트(Protagonist)’는 흔히 ‘주인공’으로 번역되지만, 본래는 이야기를 시작하고 서사의 흐름을 이끄는 중심적 존재를 의미한다. 오늘날 회화에서 프로타고니스트는 반드시 한 사람의 인물일 필요는 없다. 하나의 몸짓, 사물, 풍경, 기억, 혹은 관계의 흔적 역시 화면 안에서 서사를 발생시키는 주체가 될 수 있다. 이번 전시는 회화 속에서 누가, 혹은 무엇이 이야기를 시작하는가라는 질문에서 출발한다. 네 명의 작가는 각기 다른 회화적 언어를 통해 존재와 관계, 기억과 감정, 사회와 문화가 교차하는 장면을 펼쳐 보인다. 이들의 화면은 하나의 명확한 이야기를 전달하기보다 서로 다른 시간과 감각이 중첩되는 공간을 형성하며, 관람자는 그 안에서 자신의 경험과 기억을 호출하고 새로운 서사를 구성하게 된다. 회화는 더 이상 하나의 완결된 이야기를 제시하는 매체가 아니라, 다양한 해석과 관계를 생성하는 장으로 기능한다. 방정아(B.1968)는 동시대 사회를 살아가는 인간 군상을 특유의 회화적 리듬으로 풀어낸다. 화면 속에는 서로 무관해 보이는 인물과 사물, 풍경이 뒤섞여 등장하지만, 그 이면에는 우리 사회를 관통하는 구조와 관계가 촘촘히 얽혀 있다. 강렬한 색채와 자유로운 붓질, 유머와 풍자가 공존하는 그의 회화는 개인의 삶을 넘어 사회적 현실과 공동체의 풍경을 비춘다. 그의 인물들은 특정 개인을 재현하기보다 동시대를 살아가는 우리의 모습을 투영하는 존재로 기능하며, 화면 전체의 서사를 움직이는 힘이 된다. 이샛별(B.1970)은 최근 「기슭(Shore)」을 통해 서로 다른 세계가 맞닿는 경계의 공간을 탐구한다. 작가에게 기슭은 단순한 자연의 풍경이 아니라 현실과 가상, 인간과 비인간, 기억과 현재가 서로를 침범하며 새로운 관계를 형성하는 전이의 장소이다. 화면 속 존재들은 고정된 의미를 갖지 않은 채 끊임없이 변화하는 감각과 관계 속에서 새로운 이야기를 생성한다. 이샛별의 회화는 하나의 서사를 완성하기보다 경계에서 발생하는 긴장과 연결, 그리고 공존의 가능성을 사유하게 한다. 서원미(B.1990)는 기억과 상상, 심리적 풍경이 교차하는 회화를 구축한다. 그의 작업은 특정한 사건을 재현하기보다 언어 이전의 감각과 이미지가 만들어내는 흐름에 주목한다. 죽음과 불안, 상실과 같은 근원적 감정에서 출발한 화면은 개인적 경험과 사회적 기억을 넘나들며 끊임없이 새로운 의미를 생성한다. 최근에는 자연과 시간의 순환에 대한 관심이 더해지며, 형상은 더욱 유동적으로 변화하고 해체된다. 그의 회화는 하나의 결론에 도달하기보다 기억이 현재의 감각 속에서 끊임없이 새롭게 구성되는 과정을 드러낸다. 박소영(B.1995)은 한국 민속미술과 전통문화에서 출발한 시각적 언어를 동시대적 감각으로 재구성한다. 「Schrank Series」에서 캐비닛은 단순한 사물이 아니라 기억과 문화, 신화와 개인의 경험이 축적되는 장소이며, 화면의 서사를 이끌어가는 또 하나의 주체로 작동한다. 한국과 독일을 오가는 문화적 경험을 바탕으로 서로 다른 상징과 조형 언어를 병치하고 재해석하는 그의 작업은 문화가 고정된 정체성이 아니라 끊임없이 번역되고 변형되는 과정임을 보여준다. 그의 회화에서 프로타고니스트는 인물이 아니라 사물과 상징, 그리고 그 안에 축적된 시간과 기억이다. 《PROTAGONIST》는 회화 속 존재를 단순한 재현의 대상으로 바라보지 않는다. 화면 안의 인물과 사물, 풍경과 흔적은 각기 다른 방식으로 이야기를 시작하고 관계를 생성하며, 관람자의 경험과 만나 또 다른 서사로 확장된다. 이번 전시는 서로 다른 네 명의 작가가 구축한 회화적 세계를 통해 오늘날 회화가 어떻게 이야기를 만들어내고, 누구를 혹은 무엇을 그 이야기의 주체로 호명하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 회화는 하나의 답을 제시하기보다, 끊임없이 새로운 프로타고니스트를 탄생시키는 열린 서사의 장으로 우리 앞에 놓인다. The word 'protagonist' is often translated as "the main character," but it originally refers to the figure or presence that sets a story in motion. In painting today, the protagonist does not necessarily have to be a person. A gesture, an object, a landscape, a memory, or even the trace of a relationship can also become the starting point of a narrative. The exhibition begins by considering who or what initiates a narrative within painting. Each of the four artists works through a distinct painterly language, presenting scenes where presence and relationship, memory and emotion, and society and culture intersect. Instead of telling a single, complete story, their paintings bring together different moments, sensations, and perspectives, leaving room for multiple readings. As viewers encounter the works, they bring their own memories and experiences to them, allowing new narratives to unfold. Here, painting is presented not as a medium that delivers a fixed narrative, but as a space where different relationships and interpretations can emerge. BANG Jeong A (B.1968) depicts contemporary life through her distinctive visual language and lens. Figures, objects, and landscapes that appear unrelated coexist within her compositions, yet beneath the surface they reveal the structures and relationships that underlie our society. Combining bold colors, expressive brushwork, humor, and satire, her paintings move beyond individual experience to reflect broader social realities and the collective condition. More than simply portraying specific individuals, her figures become reflections of ourselves, serving as the driving force behind the narrative of each painting. LI Setbyul (B.1970) explores the idea of the shore as a transitional space where the boundaries between reality and the virtual, the human and the non-human, memory and the present begin to blur, giving rise to new relationships. The figures and forms within her paintings resist fixed meanings, allowing new narratives to emerge through shifting sensations and relationships. Her paintings do not resolve into a single narrative. Instead, they dwell on the tensions, connections, and possibilities of coexistence that arise along these boundaries. SEO Wonmi (B.1990) creates paintings where memory, imagination, and psychological landscapes intersect. Her work begins with sensations and images that exist before language, rather than with the depiction of specific events. Beginning with fundamental emotions such as death, anxiety, and loss, her paintings move between personal experience and collective memory, where new meanings continue to emerge. More recently, her interest in the cyclical nature of time and the natural world has led to forms that continually shift, dissolve, and fragment. Her paintings reveal how memory continues to take shape through present experience. PARK Soyoung (B.1995) reinterprets visual languages derived Korean folk painting (minhwa) and traditional culture through a contemporary perspective. In her 'Schrank Series', ongoing from 2024, these small frames of cabinets are more than objects; they become a site where memory, culture, myth, and personal experience accumulate, serving as another ‘protagonist’ that guides the narrative of the painting. Drawing on her experiences between Korea and Germany, she juxtaposes and reinterprets different symbolic and visual languages, suggesting that culture is not a fixed identity but an ongoing process of translation and transformation. In her paintings, the protagonist is not a human figure, but the objects, symbols, and the layers of time and memory they carry. 《PROTAGONIST》 looks beyond the idea of painting as a simple act of representation. Figures, objects, landscapes, and traces all play different roles in setting stories in motion and forming relationships that unfold through the viewer's encounter with the work. Bringing together four artists and their distinct artistic practices, the exhibition considers how painting continues to shape narratives today, while asking who or what can become the protagonist. Its narratives remain open, taking on new meanings through each viewer's experience.
