Namgung Sol

남궁솔은 독일 라이프치히를 기반으로 활동하는 한국 작가로, 대상을 바라볼 때 그것이 ‘무엇인가’보다 그것이 자신에게 ‘어떻게 인식되고 경험되는가’에 주목한다. 그는 의식하지 못한 채 스쳐 지나가는 감각들을 포착해 잔상으로 축적하고, 이를 회화로 드러낸다. 사물과 인물, 풍경은 고유한 이름을 지니지만, 그의 회화 속에서는 대상이 남긴 인식의 흔적과 감각의 여운으로 재구성된다. 작가는 대상 주변에 감도는 미묘한 기류와 보이지 않는 방향성, 그리고 순간적으로 스쳐 지나가는 정서의 흔적을 관찰하며, 이를 추상과 구상 사이를 오가는 자신만의 풍경으로 전개한다. 남궁솔의 작업에서 회화는 세계를 번역하는 하나의 방식으로 작동한다. 이는 재현이라기보다 감각을 천천히 축적하고 기록하는 과정에 가깝다. 그림 속 대상들은 본래의 형태로 재현되기보다, 색과 형태의 층위로 전환되며 감각화된 상태로 다시 구성된다. 색은 온도와 분위기를 전달하고, 실루엣은 존재의 구조를 형성하며, 화면은 그려지는 시간과 움직임의 흔적을 축적한다. 그의 작업은 작가가 바라본 대상과 배경, 그리고 그 사이에 감도는 공기(atmosphere)를 회화적 언어로 번역하는 과정 속에서, ‘확실한 불확실성(certain uncertainty)’의 상태를 드러낸다. 남궁솔은 드레스덴 조형예술대학(HfBK Dresden)에서 순수미술 디플롬 과정을 졸업하고, 동 대학에서 마이스터슐러 과정을 마쳤다. 그는 DAAD 외국인 학생 장학금과 작센 주립 Meisterschüler 장학금 등에 선정되었으며, 2025년에는 독일의 권위 있는 신진미술상 《Junger Westen》 파이널리스트로 선정되어 레클링하우젠 쿤스트할레(Kunsthalle Recklinghausen)에서 작품을 선보였다. 디아컨템포러리에서 국내 첫 개인전 《파랗고 일렁이는 Blue and Waving》을 개최하는 남궁솔은 Galerie FeldbuschWiesnerRudolph, 베를린(2025); Galerie Jochen Hempel, 라이프치히(2024); Kunstforum Markert Gruppe, 함부르크(2023); EX14, 드레스덴(2018) 등에서 개인전을 가졌다. 또한 Galerie FWR, 베를린(2026); CHOI&CHOI Gallery, 쾰른(2025); Galerie Jochen Hempel 및 Suburbia Contemporary, 바르셀로나(2025) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여했다. 그의 작품은 작센 주 의회, 드레스덴(2024); 드레스덴 국립미술관 Kunstfonds 컬렉션(작센 문화재단, 2023); Markert Gruppe, 함부르크(2023) 등에 소장되어 있다. Based in Leipzig, Germany, Korean-born artist Namgung Sol approaches painting not through what something is, but through how it is perceived and encountered. Attending to fleeting sensations that often pass unnoticed, she collects these as afterimages. While objects, figures, and landscapes each carry distinct names, in her paintings they are collected as traces of perception and lingering sensory impressions. Observing subtle atmospheres, Namgung translates these into a painterly language that moves between abstract and figurative paintings. In her work, painting operates as a form of translation- not a descriptive presentation of the world, but a slow process of archiving, in which subjects are transformed into layers of colour and shape. Each painting becomes an account of visual experience written through form and color: color conveys temperature and atmosphere, while silhouettes give structure to presence, and the painted surface retains the duration and movement of its making. Her work reveals a condition of “certain uncertainty,” emerging through the process of translating the subjects she encounters, their backgrounds, and the atmosphere that permeates between them into her painterly language. Namgung Sol graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (HfBK Dresden) with a Diplom degree in Fine Arts and later completed the Meisterschüler programme at the same institution. She was awarded the DAAD Scholarship for International Students as well as the Saxony State Meisterschüler Grant, and in 2025 was selected as a finalist for the prestigious German emerging art prize Junger Westen, presenting her work at Kunsthalle Recklinghausen. Namgung, who is currently holding her first solo exhibition in Korea, 'Blue and Waving', at DIA Contemporary, has presented solo exhibitions at Galerie FeldbuschWiesnerRudolph (2025), Galerie Jochen Hempel (2024), Kunstforum Markert Gruppe (2023) and EX14 (2018). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at Galerie FeldbuschWiesnerRudolph (2026), CHOI&CHOI Gallery (2025), Galerie Jochen Hempel and Suburbia Contemporary (2025), among others. Her works are held in the collections of the Saxon State Parliament, Dresden (2024), and the Kunstfonds Collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden / Saxony Cultural Foundation (2023).
