Seo Wonmi

서원미는 구상회화를 기반으로 하며, 파편화된 서사와 기억, 심리적 풍경을 회화로 풀어낸다. 특정 이야기를 전개하기보다 언어와 언어 이전의 이미지가 지닌 감각에 주목하며, 말해지지 않은 것과 끝없이 말해지는 것 사이에 머무는 풍경을 그린다. 죽음, 불안, 트라우마와 같은 근원적인 감정에서 출발한 그의 작업은 개인의 서사와 일상, 사회적 사건을 번역하며 내면과 외부 세계를 오가는 회화적 여정을 보여준다. 최근에는 파주 작업실을 오가며 마주한 풍경과 시간의 흐름, 자연과 인간의 삶이 순환하는 감각에 관심을 두며 보다 자유로운 형태의 회화를 선보이고 있다. 그의 화면 위에서 형상은 또렷하게 고정되기보다 일부 흐트러지거나 해체되며, 이미지는 과거의 기억에 머무르지 않고 현재의 감각 속에서 다시 호출된다. 특히 이야기의 흐름에 따라 스타일과 색채, 시각적 언어를 유연하게 변주하며, 축적된 서사가 감각의 영역으로 스며드는 순간을 화면 위에 펼쳐 보인다. 서원미는 성균관대학교 미술학과를 졸업했다. 금호미술관(서울, 2026), 아터테인(서울, 2024), 라흰(서울, 2023), 파이프 갤러리(서울, 2022), 보안여관 신관(서울, 2017) 등에서 개인전을 개최했다. 라흰(서울, 2025), 갤러리2 중선농원(제주, 2025), ArteK(서울, 2025)에서 2인전에 참여했으며, 디아컨템포러리 (서울, 2026), 아트센터 화이트블럭(파주, 2025), 세종문화회관 미술관(서울, 2024; 2020), 토탈미술관(서울, 2023), 미메시스 아트 뮤지엄(파주, 2023), 포스코미술관(서울, 2022), 자하미술관(서울, 2022), 예술의전당 한가람미술관(서울, 2021), 금호미술관(서울, 2021; 2020) 등에서 열린 단체전에 참여했다. 2018년에는 종근당 미술상과 SDU 미술상을 수상했고, 2019년부터 2021년까지 금호미술관 금호아트스튜디오 15기 입주 작가로 활동하였다. Seo Wonmi works primarily within figurative painting, using the medium to explore fragmented narratives, memory, and psychological landscapes. Rather than developing a specific story, she focuses on the sensations carried by language and pre-linguistic visions, painting landscapes that linger between what remains unsaid and what is endlessly spoken. Beginning with fundamental emotions such as death, anxiety, and trauma, her work translates personal narratives, everyday experiences, and social events, tracing a painterly journey between the inner self and the external world. In recent years, Seo Wonmi has become increasingly interested in the landscapes and passage of time encountered while moving between her studio in Paju and the city, as well as in the cyclical nature of life shared by humans and the natural world. This has led her toward a freer approach to painting. Within her compositions, forms are rarely fixed or fully defined; instead, they are partially disrupted, dissolved, or fragmented. Images do not remain confined to memories of the past but are continually recalled through present sensations. In particular, she fluidly shifts styles, colors, and visual languages according to the flow of each narrative, revealing moments when accumulated stories seep into the realm of sensation. Seo Wonmi graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Sungkyunkwan University. She has held solo exhibitions at Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, 2026), Artertain (Seoul, 2024), Rahn Contemporary (Seoul, 2023), Pipe Gallery (Seoul, 2022), and Boan1942 New Wing (Seoul, 2017). She has participated in duo- exhibitions at La Heen (Seoul, 2025), Gallery 2 (Jeju, 2025), and ArteK (Seoul, 2025). Her work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions at DIA Contemporary (Seoul, 2026), White Block Art Center (Paju, 2025), Sejong Museum of Art (Seoul, 2024; 2020), Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul, 2023), Mimesis Art Museum (Paju, 2023), POSCO Art Museum (Seoul, 2022), Zaha Museum (Seoul, 2022), Hangaram Art Museum at Seoul Arts Center (Seoul, 2021), and Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, 2021; 2020). In 2018, she received both the Chong Kun Dang Art Award and the SDU Art Award. From 2019 to 2021, she was a resident artist in the 15th Kumho Art Studio residency program at Kumho Museum of Art.
