Sohn Donghoon

손동훈은 기존에 존재하는 재료에 새로운 제작 방법으로 접근하여, 숨어있던 재료의 특성을 찾아 혁신적인 작품을 선보인다. 작가는 플라스틱이라는 재료를 재활용하여 새로운 조형물을 만들며 가치 있는 예술작품으로 승화시킨다. 그의 대표작 〈B.S.P. 시리즈〉는 By product, Solvent, Plastic의 약자로 디자인 목업 제작 과정에 발생하는 플라스틱 폐기물에 주목하여 만든 조형물이다. 작가는 플라스틱 부스러기를 알코올성 용액으로 용해해, 플라스틱판을 이어 붙이고, 그 이음새에서 치즈처럼 흘러나오는 독특한 형상에 색을 덧입히는 새로운 감각의 작품을 제안함으로써 재료의 재활용에 대한 가치와 예술로 치환되는 지점에 대한 방향성을 제시한다. 손동훈은 한국예술종합학교 디자인 전공 후, Ecal / University of art and design in Lausanne(로잔 예술학교)의 Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship(마스터 디자인 럭셔리 & 크래프트 맨십) 석사심화과정을 졸업하였고, 서울대학교 디자인 전공 박사과정에 재학 중이다. 글로벌 럭셔리 브랜드인 보테가 베네타, 리모와 바쉐론콘스탄틴, 크리스토플, 쇼파드, 스위스 호텔 데 트루아 크론 등과 프로젝트를 진행하였으며, 2021 DDP 디자인페어 공식 큐레이터에 선정되었다. 그 외에도 스페인 SIDE gallery, 미국 Aybar 갤러리의 전속 디자이너로 협업하며 국내외에서 활발히 활동하고 있다. Sohn Donghoon approaches existing materials with new production methods, revealing the hidden characteristics of the materials and presenting innovative art furnitures. The artist recycles plastic materials to create new sculptures, transforming them into valuable pieces of art furniture. His representative work, the "B.S.P. Series," focuses on plastic waste generated during the design mock-up production process, where "B.S.P." stands for By-product, Solvent, Plastic. By dissolving plastic scraps in alcohol-based solutions, connecting plastic sheets, and adding color to the unique shapes flowing from the seams like cheese, the artist proposes new sensory works that highlight the value of material recycling and the transformation of waste into art. Sohn graduated from the design department of Korea National University of Arts, completed the Master's program in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at Ecal / University of Art and Design in Lausanne, and is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in design at Seoul National University. He has collaborated with global luxury brands such as Bottega Veneta, Rimowa, Vacheron Constantin, Christofle, and Sofitel Legend, as well as being selected as the official curator for the 2021 DDP Design Fair. In addition, he actively engages in activities both domestically and internationally, collaborating as a dedicated designer with Spain's SIDE Gallery and the Aybar Gallery in the United States.
