Lee Jaemin ‘Days of My Heaven’ Gallery Huue Singapore is pleased to present ‘Days of My Heaven’, a solo exhibition by Jaemin Lee, from February 25 to May 25, 2022. ‘Days of My Heaven’, the title and theme of this exhibition, starts from various experiences and emotions of the artist living in Singapore as a stranger. The artist captures everyday landscapes that are easily overlooked and yet emerge them into memories with special meanings and unique stories, while bringing them into personal stories in each work thoroughly. Lee's works often feature children running with leaf umbrellas on rainy days and people who enjoy a drowsy afternoon after lunch, depicting the small moments and details of life. As such, Jaemin Lee looks at every little things with attention, and elevates the unfamiliar senses and new memories which she faces in her daily life to the practice of painting. Jaemin Lee incorporates these moments of changes in life as a nomad, and various layer of emotions felt in daily life. The most demanding and important process for Lee is to explore her own painterly language through sketches process before beginning any work. After creating sketches beforehand, some sceneries happen to appear in her head unexpectedly, which underlines how Lee’s visual language is a continuous result of experimenting with color, composition, and texture. Above all, the reason why Jaemin Lee's work has a connection between the viewer and herself - sharing their memories and emotions - is because she is very honest in presenting and delivering the stories of the subjects. Seeing Jaemin Lee's works with her surrounding environment which any one can see the essences of vitality that shines in the movements and vibrant colors of cheerful women. Jaemin Lee, who is in her mid-40s, still sketches the surrounding scenery every time and constantly investigates brush strokes and colors of her practice. Her passion to seek her painterly language and explore is clearly revealed and reflected on her painting above all else. ‘Days of My Heaven’ is her very first solo exhibition in Singapore, which marks her beginning and potentially a manifestation of how the artist has overcome the consequences of COVID19 spread. Through this exhibition, Huue Contemporary hopes to provide a small pathway away from reality and to another destination like that of Jaemin Lee’s. 이재민 개인전 ‘Days of My Heaven’ 갤러리 휴 싱가포르는 싱가포르를 기반으로 활동하는 이재민 작가의 개인전 ‘Days of My Heaven’ 展을 2월 25일부터 5월 25일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시는 싱가포르로 이주한 뒤 코로나 상황으로 인하여 계획되었던 전시들이 무산되며, 작가로써 어려운 시간을 보냈던 이재민 작가가 그 인고의 시간을 뒤로하고 일상의 새로운 감각을 노래하는 회화들을 선보일 기회로써 기획되었다. 전시의 제목이자 주제인 ‘Days of My Heaven’은 작가가 싱가포르에 거주하며 타국에서 느끼는 일상의 다양한 경험과 감정들로부터 출발한다. 작가는 쉽사리 지나치기 쉬운 일상의 풍경들을 포착해 특별한 의미와 이야기를 지닌 기억으로 치환하며, 섬세한 감수성으로 자전적인 이야기들을 작품에 담아 낸다. 이재민 작가의 작품에는 비 오는 날 나뭇잎 우산을 쓰고 뛰는 아이들, 점심을 먹고 난 뒤 나른한 오후를 즐기는 사람들처럼 작가가 일상에서 마주치는 소소한 모습이 등장한다. 이처럼 어느 것도 사사로운 것이 없다는 이재민 작가는 일상 속에서 마주하는 생경한 감각과 새로운 기억을 캔버스에 옮긴다. 자신만의 조형 언어를 탐구하는 이재민 작가에게 가장 까다롭고도 중요한 작업은 본 작업 이전에 이루어지는 아이디어 스케치 과정이다. 작가는 본 작업을 하기 전 여러 번의 아이디어 스케치를 통해 머리 속에 스치는 순간적인 풍경을 이미지화하는데, 이 과정을 통해 컬러와 구성, 질감 등을 실험하며 작가만의 고유한 조형 언어가 만들어진다. 하지만 무엇보다도 이재민 작가의 작품이 기억과 감정을 공유하는 매개체로써 기능할 수 있는 것은 주제를 표현함에 있어서 솔직하다는 점 때문일 것이다. 이재민 작가의 작품들을 바라보면, 재기발랄한 여성들의 동세와 강렬한 색감에서 빛나는 생명력을 엿볼 수 있다. 현실에서 작가 자신이 겪었던 어려움을 마주하는 대담함과 솔직함은 작품 속에서 거대한 자연을 지체없이 활보하는 인물들로 승화되어 나타난다. 어느덧 40대 중반을 바라보고 있는 이재민 작가는 여전히 일정 시간마다 주변 풍경을 스케치하고 붓질과 색감에 대한 연구를 쉬지 않고 있다. 자신만의 조형언어를 획득하고, 발전하기 위해 끊임없이 새로움을 탐구하는 그녀의 열정은 무엇보다도 작품을 통해서 여실히 드러난다. 전시는 그녀가 싱가폴에서 여는 첫 개인전이면서, 작가가 그 동안의 어려움을 잘 극복하고 아름답게 펼쳐 나갈 앞으로의 작업 세계에 대한 출사표이기도 하다. 코로나가 장기화됨으로 인해 여행과 탐험이 자유롭지 못한 지금, 이재민 작가의 이번 개인전을 통해서 관람객들이 자신만의 여행지로 잠시 떠날 수 있었으면 하는 바람이다.
