구체적이고 유연한 경험 디아 컨템포러리 서울은 2024년 7월 26일부터 8월 24일까지 서희수 개인전 '내가 경험한 짙은초록'展을 개최한다 서희수는 개인의 경험을 토대로 인간에 근원적으로 내재되어 있는 무의식의 상처와 자연의 회복력에 대해 탐구한다. 특히 작가는 부패되고 소멸되어지는 것의 존재 안에서 괴기하거나 환상적으로 그로테스크한 소멸의 미에 관심을 갖고, 삶과 자연 속에서 소외되고 무관심의 대상이 가진 이야기들을 사려 깊게 관찰한다. 그리고 그 안에서 작가의 개인적인 경험에서 발견한 것들을 표현한다. 그의 작품은 재료의 선택과 작업 과정에 주목하는데, 그간 ‘붕대’와 ‘흙'을 주재료로 삼아 인간 본연에 내재된 불안과 상처를 치유하는 매개체로 사용하였다. 특히 붕대의 특성인 ‘결’을 가진 천 재료와 흙물을 함께 결합하여 감아올림 방식으로 작업을 진행하는데, 1,230도의 가마 안에서 소성하는 과정을 통해 붕대의 재료는 가마 불 속에서 사라지고, 흙에 붙어있던 붕대의 결만 남아 얻어진 견고하고 단단한 도자질의 결과물을 상처의 결로 표현하며 그 필요성과 의미성에 대해 조형 작업과 평면 콜라주 작업으로 이어오고 있다. 서희수의 이번 개인전 ≪내가 경험한 짙은 초록≫에서는 그동안 작가가 다루어 온 인류의 근원적 상처와 자생적 회복력에 대한 이면성을 기반으로 탐구한 신작 을 선보인다. 작가는 제주의 숲 중 가장 척박하고 버려진 곶자왈 숲에서 경험한 소멸성과 자생력 그리고 비밀스러운 회복력을 고찰하며, 인류 탄생 이전의 자연이 가지고 있는 순환과 자생적 치유성을 출발점으로 삼는다. 그리고 그 안에서 견뎌내고 자라난 바위와 같은 나무의 삶과 인간의 삶을 유기적으로 연결하며, 그 교차점을 찾는다. “저는 상처 입고 부패되고, 소멸되어지는 것들의 아름다움에 눈길이 갑니다. “ -작가 노트 전시에는 작가가 숲에서 마주한 자연의 경외감과 생태적 순환을 받아들이고, 초연함에서 받은 위로와 인간 본질의 모습을 찾아 나가는 과정을 담아낸다. 그 과정을 거쳐 마침내 자연과의 연결 안에서 스스로를 솔직하게 들여다보고, 나 자신을 온전히 받아들이는 애도의 시간을 가진다. 작가는 이러한 일련의 시간을 작품에 기록하였다. 신작 은 이전의 작업에 쓰인 붕대가 남긴 단단한 ‘결’의 표현에 이어 나무껍질의 ‘결’에 집중한다. 나무껍질이 가지고 있는 텍스처를 다양한 표면으로 형상화하여, 껍질 안에 나약함과 더불어 시간의 축적 속에서 이면에 가지는 껍질의 단단함과 보호 그리고 순환적 자생력을 나타내고 있다. 나아가 재료의 물성에 대한 실험과 탐구로 다양한 작품을 선보였던 작가는 나무에서 파생된 전통 한지를 새롭게 연구하며 그의 예술적 조형미를 한층 더 확장시킨다. 기존에 반복적으로 감아올리는 작업 형식같이, 이번 작업 역시 한지를 한 겹, 한 겹 감싸듯 쌓아 올리고, 붙여 나가는 몰입 과정에서 수행의 시간을 야기시킨다. 작가는 자신이 다루는 재료가 가지는 고유의 물성을 면밀히 분석하여 텍스처의 변형을 가하는 실험으로 매체와 이미지 사이를 고찰하며, 재료가 가진 물성을 극대화한다. 그리고 고정된 재료의 한계에서 벗어나 새로운 의미의 대상으로 확장하며, 예술적 표현법을 통해 자신의 개념을 구체화하였다. 한편, 전시에서는 평면 작품 이외 작가적 시점으로 해석하여 보여주는 설치작품을 만나볼 수 있다. 평면의 틀에서 벗어난 설치작품은 생명력이 꿈틀대는 경이롭고 신비로운 숲을 경험하고, 어떠한 제약 없이 응시한 관람자의 다양한 시점에서 위치를 이동하게 한다. 그리고 마주하는 순간 다양한 감정의 변화를 예고하며, 무엇인가 기억하고 상상하게 하는 순수한 경험을 행위 하도록 한다. 작가는 설치 작품을 통해 작가 스스로가 경험하고 해석한 ‘짙은 초록’을 마주하며 파생되는 인간의 다층적인 감정을 전달하는데, 이는 색이 가지는 자극이 하나의 감정에 의한 것이 아니라 동시에 다른 감정도 수반하는 공감각적인 것임을 알려준다. 그리고 인간 본연에 내재한 여러 본성과 무의식적 반응을 이끌어내어, 관객들이 시선이 닫는 그곳에서 많은 이들이 감정의 기억을 마주하고, 새로운 지각의 확장과 사유의 여정이 되기를 기대한다. Concrete and Flexible Experiences DIA Contemporary is pleased to present "Last Summer," a solo exhibition by artist Suh Heesu, running from July 26 to August 24, 2024. Suh Heesu's work explores the intrinsic, unconscious wounds found in humans and the resilient qualities of nature, drawing from her personal experiences. Her art emphasizes the grotesque beauty found in decay and disappearance, uncovering stories from marginalized and overlooked subjects in life and nature. In this exhibition, Suh utilizes 'bandages' and 'clay' to explore themes of healing and the inherent anxieties and wounds within humans. The unique process involves wrapping cloth, textured like bandages, around clay, which is then fired at 1,230 degrees Celsius. The burning away of the bandage material leaves behind textures on the solid ceramic, symbolizing scars, extending into both three-dimensional sculptures and collages. "Last Summer" features new works that explore the dichotomy between humanity's fundamental wounds and nature's self-healing capabilities. Inspired by the rugged and often overlooked Gotjawal Forest in Jeju, South Korea, Suh reflects on themes of decay, resilience, and the mysterious recuperative power of nature, exploring these concepts in a context that predates humanity. She draws parallels between the enduring life of trees and the human experience, highlighting their shared resilience and growth. "I am drawn to the beauty of the wounded, the decayed, and the vanished." -Artist Statement The exhibition also reflects Suh's reverence for nature's cycles and the comfort found in detachment. This introspective journey, captured in her art, leads to a period of mourning, honest self-reflection, and acceptance of one's connection to nature. Suh's latest works transition from bandage textures to the textures of tree bark, emphasizing its protective and regenerative qualities alongside inherent vulnerability. Suh's exploration extends to traditional Korean paper, Hanji, made from trees. She layers Hanji sheet by sheet in a process similar to her previous wrapping techniques, creating a meditative experience. Through a meticulous study of her materials, Suh experiments with texture, pushing beyond traditional forms to articulate her conceptual ideas more concretely. Additionally, the exhibition includes installation pieces that offer an immersive experience, inviting viewers into a vibrant and mysterious forest. These installations encourage exploration and evoke diverse emotional responses, sparking memories and imagination. Suh's installations convey the complex emotions elicited by encountering the deep green, showcasing how color can evoke a multisensory response and connect with multiple emotions. These works invite viewers to reflect on their emotional memories and embark on a journey of new perceptions and thoughts.
