Suh Heesu

서희수의 작업은 재료의 선택과 작업 과정에 주목한다. 초기 사람의 심리적 불안함과 죽음에 대한 주제로 시작한 그의 작품은 최근 무의식적으로 받은 인간의 상처와 소멸 그리고 회복에 대한 주제로 변모하며, 자연과 인간의 본질적인 본성에 대해 탐구한다. 작가는 초기 상처와 치유에 대해 고찰하며, ‘붕대’를 주요 소재로 삼았다. 작품에 사용되는 ‘붕대’는 실제 붕대가 아닌 작가가 흙으로 빚은 작가만의 소재이다. 붕대라는 유연하고 연약한 소재에 흙의 물성을 가하여 그것을 곧게 세운다. 그리고 흙물에 담근 붕대를 겹치고 말려서 형태를 만드는 반복적인 수행의 작업을 거쳐 가마 안에 들어간 붕대는 타버리고 날아가며, 붕대의 흔적인 '결'만 남기지만, 흙은 도리어 단단하고 더 견고한 물질로 변모한다. 흙과 섬유의 유연한 물성을 결합한 재료로 유연하고 볼륨감 넘치는 자연스러운 형태를 통해 평면, 부조, 설치 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 선보인다. 최근 작가가 새롭게 선보이는 는 붕대의 '결'에 이어 나무껍질의 '결'에 주목한다. 작가에게 '결'은 탐구하는 대상의 재현이자, 은유적인 언어이다. 상처로 생긴 결과 붕대의 결 그리고 나무껍질의 결로 연결 고리를 짓으며, 매체와 물질의 성질에 따라 변화하는 오감의 전달에 집중한다. 서희수는 홍익대학교 도예유리과와 동 대학원 공예디자인과를 졸업하였으며, 뉴욕 주립대학교에서 미술치료학과 박사 과정을 졸업하였다. 뉴욕 Samuel Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz(2000), 관훈갤러리(2003), 통인갤러리(2011), 웅갤러리(2014), 통인갤러리(2017), 다함갤러리(2020)에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 영은미술관(2002), 아라아트센터(2015), [테제](2021, 분더샵), 서울공예박물관(2022) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 프랑스장식박물관, 헬린베글린본사, 코리아나박물관, Joseph, HPX도산점 등에 소장되어 있다. Suh Heesu work focuses on materials, choices, and the process of creation. Exploring themes of human psychological anxiety and death, the artist has primarily utilized "Wrap bandages" as a central material. However, the bandages used in the artwork are not actual bandages but rather a material crafted by the artist using clay. The artist combines the flexible and fragile nature of bandages with the properties of clay, which allows them to stand straight. Through a repetitive process of overlapping and wrapping bandages dipped in clay, which are then fired in a kiln, the bandages disintegrate and disappear, leaving only their traces behind. However, the artwork transforms into a solid and robust substance. In this manner, the artist combines the flexible qualities of earth and fibers to present works in various genres such as flatwork, relief, and installation, showcasing natural and voluminous forms. Through the act of wrapping bandages, symbolizing wounds and healing, the artist hopes to communicate the internal process of healing and resilience.
