Choi Insun's artistic exploration delves deep into the material possibilities of painting, characterized by his investigations into form and qualitative experiments. His aim is to uncover existential meanings by exploring the interaction between materials and humanity. In his artworks, Choi skillfully combines three-dimensional and two-dimensional elements, backgrounds, and objects. Through a process of deconstruction and combination within the foundational structure of form, he reflects on the essence of form, navigating the delicate boundary between figuration and abstraction, which he expresses vividly in his work. His pieces, distinguished by the prominent properties of thick materials, showcase a connection between materiality and human sensibility. Instead of merely layering paint thickly, Choi constructs substantial layers of paint on the canvas, drawing inspiration from the sensory trajectory perceived from his inner world, with the aim of discovering human essence through materials. Additionally, he employs his uniquely sensual and vibrant color palette to present refined variations of color, stimulating the viewer's visual perception and broadening their perspective beyond entrenched viewpoints. Choi Insun earned degrees from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Hongik University, as well as from the Graduate School of New York State University. He currently serves as a professor in the Department of Painting at Hongik University. He has showcased his solo exhibitions at galleries including Gwanhoon Gallery (1989), Arario Gallery (1997), Kumho Museum of Art (2001), Nohwa Gallery (2004), Hakgojae (2008), Yehwarang (1995, 2013), Du-in Gallery (2016), Gallery Huue Singapore Online (2021), and Olivia Park Gallery (2023). Additionally, he has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those at Samsung Museum of Art (1999), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (2001), and Seoul Museum of Art (2004). He has been honored with awards such as the Grand Prize at the Central Art Exhibition (1992), Excellence Award at the Korea Art Exhibition (1994), Grand Prize at the Hankook Ilbo Young Artists Invitation Exhibition (1996), Today's Young Artist Award (2002), Ha Jong Hyun Art Museum Award (2003), and Seo Artist Award (2005).
