Lee Eu

이유는 모든 물감이 지닌 질료를 특수한 태도와 방식으로 접근하며, 회화의 평면성에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하고자 한다. 그의 작업은 크게 세 가지 범주로 진행되는데, 〈마티에르(Matières)〉에서 물질성에 대해 탐구하고, 〈제스트(Gestes)〉에서 작품을 하는 작가의 몸짓, 즉 행위에 대해 고찰한다. 그리고 최근작 〈회화에 관한 질문(Peinture enquestion)〉에서는 매체의 물성과 제스트를 결합하며, ‘질료’라는 미적 개념을 통해 회화 그 자체가 무엇인지에 대한 본질적인 질문을 던진다. 작품은 물감의 덩어리를 캔버스에 안착시키는 방식으로 물감의 입체감과 건조된 상태의 표면에 드러나는 질감을 강조한다. 나아가 물감덩어리의 흘러내린 방향과 부피를 의도적으로 조정하고 우연이 아닌 작가의 의도하에 진행된 행위임을 강조하며, 회화에서 그린다는 작가의 행위와 재료의 탐구를 통해 회화의 본질이 무엇인지에 대해 성찰한다. 그리고 관람객의 발걸음이나 빛에 따라 변화하는 작품이 살아 숨 쉬는 것을 보여주며, 회화의 변주 과정을 통해 그림 그 자체에 주목한다. 이유는 홍익대학교 회화과를 졸업하고 프랑스 스트라스부르그 아르데코 석사를 졸업했다. 서울과 파리를 오가며 활동하는 작가는 2011년 파링예술공동체에서 첫 개인전을 가지며, 파리 l’art à la page 갤러리(2013), 파리 oclastes 갤러리(2016), Artwork Paris-Séoul 갤러리(2016), 리옹 Regard Sud 갤러리(2018), 대구발전소(2019), 갤러리 연오재(2020), 갤러리엠나인(2023) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였다. [ART-IST](2022, 분더샵), [소나무](2021, aubourg24, 파리), [울의 빛](2020, Galerie Horizon, 파리), [간](2018, 바스티유 디자인센터, 파리), [언어의 이전](2016, 89갤러리, 파리), [8967](2014, 아뜰리에 구스타브, 파리) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였으며, 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 루이비통, 리옹 시청에서 소장하고 있다. The artist Lee Eu approaches the materiality inherent in all pigments with a special attitude and method, aiming to present a new perspective on the flatness of painting. Her work is broadly categorized into three main themes: in "Matieres (Materials)," she explores materiality, in "Gestes (Gestures)," she contemplates the gestures of the artist in the act of creating, and in her recent work "Peinture en question (Painting in question)," she combines the materiality of the medium with gestures, posing essential questions about what painting itself is through the aesthetic concept of "materials." The works emphasize the three-dimensionality of the paint and the texture revealed on the dry surface of the canvas by anchoring chunks of paint onto it. Furthermore, intentional adjustments to the direction and volume of the flowing paint globs highlight the deliberate action carried out by the artist, underscoring the act of painting and the exploration of materials, reflecting on the essence of painting. Additionally, the works demonstrate vitality, breathing and changing with the footsteps of the viewer or the light, drawing attention to the variations in painting through the process. Lee Eu graduated from the painting department of Hongik University and obtained a Master's degree in Decorative Arts from Ardeco, Strasbourg, France. Active between Seoul and Paris, the artist held her first solo exhibition in 2011 at the Paris Art Community, followed by solo exhibitions at various venues including Galerie l’art à la page(2013), Galerie oclastes(2016) in Paris, Artwork Paris-Séoul Gallery(2016), Regard Sud Gallery in Lyon(2018), Daegu Development Studio(2019), Gallery Yeon-O-Jae(2020), and Gallery M9(2023). She also participated in numerous group exhibitions such as [ART-IST](2022, BOONTHESHOP), [Pine Tree] (2021, aubourg24, Paris), [Light of Wool](2020 Galerie Horizon, Paris), [Gap](2018, Bastille Design Center, Paris), [Migration of Language](2016, 89Gallery, Paris), [8967](2014, Atelier Gustave, Paris), and her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Louis Vuitton, and Lyon City Hall.
