Kang Airan

미디어 아티스트의 대표주자인 강애란은 책이라는 소재로 실제와 가상의 관계성에 대해 탐구한다. 초기 생각 주머니의 개념으로 보자기를 활용하던 작가는 이후, 생각과 관념의 상징물인 책이라는 매개체로 확장해 설치, 회화, 미디어 등 다양한 형태의 작품을 선보인다. 그의 작품은 지식을 담고 있는 책의 고정된 의미에서 벗어나, 자기만의 새로운 해석을 더하여 공존의 화두를 던지며, 정신과 관념에 새로운 개념을 제시한다. 작가의 대표작〈라이팅 북〉은 빛을 통해 무한한 인식을 확장하고, 작가만의 지식 공간을 형성하는 동시에 보는 이로 하여금 직접 체험하고, 스스로 사유하게 함으로써 책을 통해 변화하는 시대적 담론을 함께 논의한다. 또한 작가는 꾸준히 여성의 삶을 조망하는 작업을 통해 젠더에 대한 문제를 고찰하며, 시대적으로 살아 있는 담론을 성찰하고자 한다. 강애란은 이화여자대학교 서양화과를 졸업 후 일본의 다마미술대학교에서 석사 및 박사학위를 취득하였으며, 현재 이화여자대학교 조형예술학부 교수로 재직 중이다. 1986년 도쿄 시로타갤러리를 시작으로, 도쿄, 서울, 로스앤젤레스, 쿄토, 파리, 모스크바 등 국내외에서 주요의 개인전을 개최했으며, 아르코 미술관, 세비아 비엔날레, 독일의 ZKM 등 해외 유수의 미술관, 비엔날레 등의 기획전에 초대되었다. 그의 작품은 일본의 마치다 판화미술관, 반지조각정원미술관, 서울시립미술관, 국립현대미술관 등 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다. Renowned media artist Kang Airan explores the relationship between reality and virtuality using books as her primary subject matter. Initially utilizing book covers as conceptual pockets of thoughts, she later expanded her artistic repertoire by incorporating books as symbols of thoughts and concepts, exploring various forms of expression including installation, painting, and media art. Her works transcend the fixed meanings traditionally associated with books, adding her own interpretations to provoke discussions on coexistence and presenting new concepts to the realms of the mind and intellect. Among her notable works, "Lighting Book" extends infinite perception through light, creating Kang's own realm of knowledge. By allowing viewers to directly experience and contemplate, she engages in discussions on the evolving discourse surrounding books in the digital age. Furthermore, Kang consistently examines gender issues through her exploration of women's lives, aiming to reflect on contemporary discourses. After graduating from the Department of Western Painting at Ewha Womans University, Kang earned her master's and doctoral degrees from Tama Art University in Japan. She currently serves as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Ewha Womans University. Since starting her career with the Shirota Gallery in Tokyo in 1986, she has held major solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Seoul, Los Angeles, Kyoto, Paris, Moscow, and other cities worldwide. She has also been invited to participate in prestigious group exhibitions at institutions such as the ARKO Art Museum, Seville Biennale, and Germany's ZKM. Her works are housed in prominent institutions including the Machida Print Museum and Benji Sculpture Garden in Japan, Seoul Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea.
