Kim Meeyoung

회화의 색다른 질감을 보여주는 김미영은 유화의 재료를 이용하여 붓 대신에 나이프, 주걱, 손 등을 사용하여 두툼한 물감 덩어리가 캔버스 위에 입체감 있게 튀어나오는 작업을 통해, 시각으로 촉각을 자극하는 작품을 선보인다. ‘wet on wet’(앞서 바른 물감이 마르기 전 다음 도료를 바르는 페인팅 기법)으로 자신만의 기법을 구축한 작가는 역동적인 붓질의 움직임과 유화의 질감에 보는 각도마다 다채로운 형상을 표현하는데, 이와 같은 작가의 작업방식은 그가 캔버스 위에 드러내고자 하는 순간의 기억과 감각을 잡아두기 위한 매우 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 또한 시각 표면을 다루는 다채로운 방법을 제시하고자 하는 작가는 동양화적 기법과 유화의 재료를 접목하여 ‘wet on wet’의 기법 안에서도 동양화의 투명성을 담은 작품을 선보이는데, 리드미컬한 추상의 형상들이 한층 더 섬세하게 표현되어 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 작가는 회화의 다양한 기법에 대해 끊임없이 탐구함으로써 우발적으로 얻어진 회화적 효과를 통해 회화가 가지는 본질과 물성에 대해 고찰하며 회화의 다양성에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 김미영은 이화여자대학교 동양화과와 동 대학원, 영국 런던 왕립예술대학교(RCA)에서 회화과를 졸업하였다. 2012년 갤러리 도스를 시작으로 스페이스 챕터투(2015), 이화익 갤러리(2017, 2020), 노블레스 컬렉션(2019), 갤러리 휴 싱가포르(2021), 미국 Helen J Gallery(2023) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 일민 미술관(2021), 런던 다이슨갤러리(2013), 런던 오픈플렌(2013), 런던 MoK 스페이스(2014), 스페이스 K(2017), 하이트컬렉션(2018), 아이슬랜드 레이카비트(2018), 대구미술관(2022) 등 다수의 기획전에 참여하였다. 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 대구미술관, 호반건설, 하나은행 본사, 싱가포르 The Work Project와 영국 런던 Roland Cowan Architects 등에서 소장하고 있다. Kim Meeyoung showcases artwork that presents unique textures in painting. Using oil painting materials, the artist employs knives, spatulas, and hands instead of brushes to create thick paint masses that protrude from the canvas, stimulating the senses visually. By employing the 'wet on wet' technique, where the next layer of paint is applied before the previous one dries, the artist has developed her own method. This technique allows her to express diverse shapes with dynamic brush movements and the texture of oil painting, showcasing various forms from different viewing angles. Such a method is crucial for capturing the momentary memory and sensation that the artist wishes to reveal on the canvas. Moreover, aiming to present diverse methods of handling visual surfaces, the artist incorporates Oriental painting techniques and materials into oil painting, even within the 'wet on wet' technique, to create works imbued with the transparency of Oriental painting. This results in even more delicately expressed rhythmic abstract shapes. Through constant exploration of various painting techniques, the artist seeks to reflect on the essence and properties of painting through serendipitously obtained painterly effects and to discuss the diversity of painting. Kim Meeyoung majored in Oriental painting and graduated from the same department's graduate school at Ewha Womans University. She also graduated from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, UK, with a major in painting. Since starting at Gallery Dose in 2012, she has held solo exhibitions at venues such as Space Chapter Two(2015), Ewhaik Gallery(2017, 2020), Noblesse Collection(2019), Gallery Huue Singapore(2021, Singapore), and Helen J Gallery(2023, USA). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those at Ilmin Museum of Art(2021), Dyson Gallery(2013, London), Open Plan(2013, London), Mok Space(2014, London), Space K(2017), Hite Collection(2018), Reykjavik(2018, Iceland), and Daegu Art Museum(2022). Her works are held in collections such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Daegu Art Museum, Hoban Construction, Hana Bank Headquarters, TWP in Singapore, and Roland Cowan Architects in London.
