Kwak Chulan

미술과 공예를 하나의 예술로 합치는 곽철안은 경계와 경계 사이를 유영하는 곡선의 유희에 대해 고찰하며, 이를 작품으로 선보인다. ‘한 획의 오브제’를 주제로 하는 그의 작품은 한글의 선이 가지는 율동감을 입체적인 조형물로 표현하고 있다. 작가는 360도를 지나는 원으로 작품을 닫혀 있지 않은 모습으로 작품 마감하는데, 이는 경계가 없는 무경계를 표현함으로써 곡선에 대한 완전한 자유를 얻고, 형상화된 물질의 본질을 마주한다. 이러한 그의 작품은 가구와 조각 사이의 경계에서 벗어나 새로운 조형 예술에 대한 경계를 확장하고 있다. 곽철안은 홍익대학교 목조형가구학과를 졸업하고 네덜란드 디자인 아카데미 아인트호벤에서 컨텍스추얼 디자인을 전공하였으며, 현재 상명대학교 생활예술학과에 교수로 재직 중이다. 2015년 현대자동차그룹 ‘브릴리언트 30’와 2014년 ‘Korea Tomorrow’ 작가로 선정되었다. 2011년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 베를린 DMY(2012), 파리 디자인 윅스(2014), G갤러리(2017), ADM 갤러리(2020), 갤러리 마크(2020), 웅갤러리(2021, 2022) 등에서 개인전을 개최했으며, [국립한글 박물관 한글 프로젝트](2019, 국립한글박물관), [THèSE](2021, 분더샵), [ART-IST](2022, 분더샵), [𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘌𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩](2023, 갤러리 이알디) [Art Pick](2023, 한가람미술관) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 작품은 국립현대미술관과 문화재청 궁능유적본부 창덕궁에 소장하고 있고, 현대백화점, 경주 교통 최부자고택, 토스카나 제주 토스카나 리조트, 그랜드 조선 부산 등에 작품이 설치되어 있다. Kwak Chulan, who merges art and craft into a unified art form, delves into the interplay of curves within boundaries and showcases it in his artworks. His pieces, themed 'A Stroke of Objet,' capture the rhythmic flow of Korean brushstrokes in three-dimensional sculptures. The artist completes his works in a shape not confined by a circle traversing 360 degrees. This signifies the absolute freedom of curves, expressing boundless boundaries and confronting the essence of materialized substances. His creations push the limits of contemporary sculptural art, transcending the boundaries between furniture and sculpture. Kwak Chulan graduated from the Department of Wooden Furniture Sculpture at Hongik University and majored in Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He was selected as part of Hyundai Motor Group's 'Brilliant 30' in 2015 and as a 'Korea Tomorrow' artist in 2014. Since his first solo exhibition in 2011, he has held solo exhibitions at various venues such as Berlin DMY(2012), Paris Design Week(2014), G Gallery(2017), ADM Gallery(2020), Gallery Mark(2020), and Woong Gallery(2021, 2022). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions including the National Hangeul Museum Hangeul Project(2019), THèSE(2021), ART-IST(2022), One Chair is Enough(2023), and Art Pick(2023). His works are collected by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Cultural Heritage Administration Changdeokgung Palace, and installed in places like Hyundai Department Store, Gyeongju Transportation Choibusa Mansion, Toscana Jeju Resort, and Grand Josun Busan.
