“나의 작업은 경험의 묘사가 아닌, 경험 그 자체이다.” 도널드 마티니는 ‘현재’라는 시간성에 영원히 존재하도록 만들어진 몸짓, 즉 순간의 제스처로부터 포착된 강렬한 힘에 대 탐구한다. 작품을 그리는 행위 그 자체를 예술로 표현하는 작가는 사각의 캔버스 틀에서 벗어나 갤러리 (혹은 미술관) 벽면에 작품을 칠한 듯이 거대한 붓놀림을 부조 작품을 선보이다. 대형 액션 페인팅의 형식으로 예술가 내면의 충동을 물리적으로 표현한 작가는 예술에 대한 작가의 본질적인 개념을 성찰한다. 작가의 거대한 붓놀림과도 같은 작품이 지닌 역동성으로부터 작품과 관람객 사이의 공간은 예술적 경험의 공간을 활성화한다. 그리고 작품을 통해 관찰자로서의 관람 경험을 넘어 작품과 감정적 교류를 시도하고 순간적이고 본능적인 작품과의 유대감을 경험하도록 유도한다. 도널드 마티니는 비주얼 오브 아트 스쿨, 아트 스튜던트 리그, 뉴욕대학교와 펜실베니아 아카데미에서 수학하였다. 작가는 런던 The Courtauld Institute, 코웰 Falmouth Museum, 웨인 카운티 FWMoA, 미들랜드 Alden B Dow Museum of Art, 미국 윌밍턴 The Cameron Art Museum 등 해외 유수한 미술관 및 갤러리에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 미국 피닉스 미술관, 크로커 미술관, 에이몬 카터 미국 미술관, 튤레인 대학교 뉴컴 미술관, FWMoA, 람보르기니 박물관, 이탈리아 산타가타 볼로냐제, 뉴욕 월드 트레이드 센터 그리고 로스앤젤레스 국제공항 등에 그의 작품이 소장되어 있다. Donald Martiny explores the intense power captured in the gestures of a moment that exists forever in the temporality of the 'now.' The artist transcends the limits of a square canvas frame to represent a monumental brushstroke, as if he were painting directly on a gallery wall, thus creating a 2D sculpture. Through the format of large-scale action painting, Martiny physically embodies the artist's inner impulses, reflecting on the fundamental concept of art. The dynamism inherent in Martiny's colossal brushstrokes activates the space between the artwork and the viewer, creating a space for artistic experience. Moreover, Martiny encourages viewers to experience emotional engagement with the artwork beyond the role of observer, attempting to foster a sense of connection with the instantaneous and instinctive nature of the artwork. Donald Martiny studied at the Visual Arts School, Art Students League, New York University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has held solo exhibitions at prestigious art institutions and galleries overseas, including The Courtauld Institute in London, Falmouth Museum in Cornwall, FWMoA in Wayne County, Alden B. Dow Museum of Art in Midland, and Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, among others. His works are held in collections at prominent institutions such as the Phoenix Art Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Eamon Carter Museum of American Art, Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University, FWMoA, Lamborghini Museum, Santa Caterina in Bologna, the World Trade Center in New York, and Los Angeles International Airport.
