Balance is commonly understood as a state of stability and order. Yet, the world we live in is constantly shifting, colliding, and restructuring itself. With increase of technological development, overwhelming number of information, and increasingly unstable social conditions, balance is no longer an ideal state to be grasped. Instead, it has become a process of continual adjustment where perfect balance is hard to locate as it reveals itself through instability. 《Unbalanced Balance》 begins from this paradox. The exhibition does not approach balance as a fixed idea of symmetry or stability. Instead, it looks at balance as something that emerges when different mediums and materialities, colours and structures, space and time, and two- and three-dimensional forms meet, collide, and coexist. Balance is not a finished result, but a process that is constantly being formed, dismantled, and rebuilt. Five participating artists - SUH Heesu, YU Jeongmin, YOON Jongju, YOON Junghee, HONG Jung-Ouk- have their own unique practices, but they all begin with the same questions. How does form sustain tension? How can materials with different properties coexist? How does colour create time and space? And how can painting and sculpture move beyond their own boundaries to form new relationships? Each artist approaches such questions as a relationship and a process of balance that continues to emerge and entangle, not presenting balance as something complete. SUH Heesu (b.1973) explores how different materialities and layers of time form, revealing the tension and potential within the materials she works with. In her earlier works, she repeatedly wrapped and dried bandages made of clay, translating the human experiences of wounds and healing, disappearance and persistence into material form. More recently, she has expanded her practice to include non-fired materials such as hanji (traditional Korean paper), wood, and metal, incorporating the distinct qualities of these materials and the layers of time they embody into her sculptural language. YU Jeongmin (b.1990) creates abstract forms through arch and its repetition, transformation, and movement, using squid plywood and resin as primary materials. The arch is a central formal element in his practice, embodying both structural stability and organic movement. By actively exploring the flexible properties of plywood, YU creates curves that expand the potential of the material and the possibilities of form. For this exhibition, he introduces a new colour palette distinct from his previous works, further extending the relationship between balance and forms. YOON Junghee (b.1978) expands the line as a her unique language, transforming straight and curved lines, repeated loops, and knots into organic flows within space. Using materials such as thread, pipes, and copper wire, she creates sculptural structures through repetition and rhythm, combining the delicate qualities of craft. Her works are installed in various ways across walls, floors, and shelves, moving beyond fixed forms of presentation. Through the relationship between line, material, and space, YOON’s works create a new balance within the surrounding environment. YOON Jongju (b.1971) explores the subtle differences that emerge between colours. Layers of colour repeatedly built upon the surface interact with light, creating a sense of space and time in constant movement. Rather than pursuing a complete and fixed image, her compositions, assembled like a puzzle, reveal the rhythm created through the relationships between individual colours. In YOON’s paintings, light becomes time and colour becomes space. Balance does not emerge from contrast, but from the subtle transition created through the formations of colours. HONG Jung-Ouk (b.1976) begins his practice with the question of why painting must always remain confined to the wall. By deconstructing the fundamental structures of painting -canvas and frame-and combining mediums such as wood, glass, and LED lighting, he expands painting into space. Within his works, the relationship between flatness and volume, light and materiality, is continuously reconsidered. Moving fluidly between painting, sculpture, and space, HONG’s practice proposes new possibilities of balance. 《Unbalanced Balance》 considers balance not as a state of completion, but as a state of continual formation. Different materiality, structures and temporalities do not become a single order. Rather, a new balance emerges when each maintains its own differences while existing together. In this exhibition, balance is not understood as the result of symmetry or stability, but as a relationship continuously shaped through tension and change. The five artists propose new forms of order created through differences and coexistence. Instead of a fixed answer, their works reveal how materials, forms, and spaces encounter one another and generate new possibilities, inviting viewers to consider their own understanding of balance. Perfect balance does not exist. It emerges through the constant movement of shifting, adjusting, and finding new points of connection.
